for about five years, i have had the privilege to have a gracious older lady as company for dinner almost every friday. she retired from teaching about 20 years ago and i got to know her because she had become a regular at the cafe. tuesday was bridge day for her so she came for lunch before the game. friday was hair day so she came for lunch on her way home. sometimes she had lunch after or before her mani-pedi. what a wonderful lady and she loved our food. she had a few falls and some broken bones so there were times when we took our food to her. if she did not come for two weeks, we would call or she would call us to say why. usually it was a broken bone or sprain and she could not manage the stairs in the building where the cafe is located. but she always came back. our two favorite dinner spots were the ryefield in bolton and jacks in queensbury. she loved to eat and so do i. we had our favorite foods at each place, and at jacks, we always split the peach melba. she, as a diabetic, opted for the smaller portion. a few months ago, she told me during lunch that the doctor was concerned about her breathing and she was having tests. tests revealed a congestive heart and last thursday, my friend passed away at the age of 85. i will miss the dinners and the stories, her wisdom, her laugh. i will miss my friend.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
