Craig Merrell, owner of Dockside Landing Marina in Lake George and Hague, and chef David Britton came together to open a new Glens Falls eatery, the Downtown City Tavern at 21 Elm St.<\/p>\n

Merrell, a downstate native, said he got the inspiration to start his own restaurant from the seasonal restaurant that was a part of one of his marinas. He enjoyed it and wanted to give something to Glens Falls that it hasn’t seen before.
\nBritton runs a mobile pizza oven service called Pies on Wheels and has been a guest on the popular Food Network television show “Dinner Impossible,” as well as a chef at other establishments over the years.<\/p>\n

“You see places like mine a lot in Saratoga, not so much in Glens Falls. The Downtown City Tavern is open seven days a week and has later hours than most places and we are extending the hours even later,” Merrell said.<\/p>\n

Merrell chose Glens Falls as the home of his restaurant because he liked the direction the city is moving in and its plans for improving the city. He also noted how willing the city was to help.<\/p>\n

“Most cities give you a list of reasons as to why you can’t do something. Glens Falls was just the opposite,” Merrell said.<\/p>\n

Prior to the current venture, the building most recently house the Orange Cat Cafe.<\/p>\n

Currently, they offer lunch and dinner menus and operate from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m., Sunday through Wednesday, and 11 a.m. to midnight Thursday through Saturday. Last call is at 1 a.m. on weekends.<\/p>\n

The menu as of late is mostly gourmet wood-fired pizzas and hot comfort foods, but, said Merrell, “Our menu will continue to evolve. In the summer months, ice cream and milkshakes will become part of the menu options as well.”<\/p>\n

The atmosphere is comfortable and inviting, with windows to view the wood-fire oven, which bring a bit of a Saratoga feel to the Adirondacks. The building itself has a lot of history too. It was formerly the Boston Candy Kitchen.<\/p>\n

When Merrell moved his business into the building, he found the old table tops they used to roll the candy out on. The marble is some of the last to come out of the quarry in Glens Falls that was shut down back in 1923. Merrell currently uses the marble tables as formal dining tables for his guests.<\/p>\n

“It’s a way to keep some of the history alive” Merrell said.<\/p>\n
