A new fitness option, Pilates, is available in downtown Glens Falls. Elevation Pilates, which opened in May, offers mat Pilates and Pilates using specialized machines, both under the direction of studio owner Kathy Porcell, a certified Pilates instructor.
\nPilates emphasizes working and strengthening core muscles, particularly the abdominal and back muscles. It was originally developed in England by Joseph Pilates, to help injured soldiers regain body strength. He created the original equipment out of hospital beds, modified to give assistance with some of the movements.<\/p>\n

Today’s Pilates studio features specialized equipment, made for the practice, including the “Tower,” the “Universal Reformer,” and the “Wunda Chair.” They are, says Porcell, hard to describe but pictured on her webpage.<\/p>\n

Porcell describes Pilates as “a unique method of body conditioning performed through safe and controlled movements.” “Consistent practice,” she promises, “will develop long lean musculature.” Benefits include, according to her website, increased core strength and stability; improved posture, stamina and flexibility; heightened body awareness; diminished chronic weakness; and more energy and less chronic pain.<\/p>\n

Picture yourself lying on your back on a mat. Raise your head and your arms and\/or legs. Hold it. Or, grab your ankles, pull your legs up in the air, and rock back and forth like a baby. If you like “crunches,” the classic abdominal exercise, try doing them with your legs raised. In other words, it can be hard work, but much of it will feel familiar to anyone familiar with aerobics-style fitness regimes or even yoga.<\/p>\n

Porcell says that her classes are “very highly individualized,” whether private, semi-private or in classes of four to eight people. Exercises, she emphasizes, are very precise and done in a controlled manner. The equipment adds resistance and support. There is a maximum of four students in classes using the equipment; mat classes may have as many as eight people. That enables her to give individual attention to each student, she points out.<\/p>\n

Porcell did a six-month apprenticeship and taught in New York City before moving north. She lived for 20 years in Saratoga Springs and taught in Saratoga and studied at the Movement Laboratory in Troy (which recently closed after six years in that city). She now lives in Lake George.<\/p>\n

The Glens Falls studio, at 19 Ridge Street, on the second floor, is open five days a week, Monday to Thursday and Saturday, in the morning and evening. Class fees range from $15 an hour for group classes to $60 for individual lessons, with multi-class packages available. Business, so far, has been “very good, thank you.” She has had a group of Glens Falls city employees in a program sponsored by Blue Shield. Students range in age from their mid-twenties to 81 years of age, mostly women, but also some men, including a professional lacrosse player. “Many people are either cross-training or have tried many other regimes and want something different,” she said.<\/p>\n

They come for many reasons, according to Porcell: the studio is quiet, attractive and inviting–not intimidating–and they like the one-on-one instruction.<\/p>\n
