Mollie’s Mason Jar, located at 13 Park Avenue Extension in Hadley, has a history of the unexpected. Aside from being a mostly breakfast and lunch place that offers dinner on Fridays and bluegrass music sometimes, it wasn’t always at its present location. Mollie’s, as it’s affectionately known by locals, was one of the businesses whose location on Main Street in Corinth was destroyed in a 2005 fire that wiped out a large piece of Corinth’s downtown.

Rather than waiting to see what rebuilding help they might be afforded in Corinth, then-owners Jeff and Mollie Milkiewicz chose to move their business up Route 9N about 4 miles to the former Masonic Temple turned golf pro shop. Things went well for a while, but the economy soured and Jeff and Mollie decided to sell the business. They made plans to sell it to another party with the understanding that Jeff and Mollie would host one more event for the Adirondack Bluegrass League. The Milkiewicz’s had let all their staff go, so in order to honor their commitment, an “all-hands-on-deck” went out to family.

Jeff’s daughter, Rachel Reed, who had just set up her chiropractic office in Glens Falls, and Rachel’s husband, Jacob, a carpenter, responded. As Rachel was waitressing and Jacob was tending bar, Rachel said to Jacob, “This is fun. Let’s do this.” Jacob agreed. The Reed’s checked things out and decided to buy Mollie’s themselves. The staff hadn’t found new jobs yet, so they hired them back.

The chiropractic office, on which Jacob had done a lot of work, was left behind. He turned his attention instead to finishing the apartment upstairs over Mollie’s and refinishing floors. Rachel and Jacob and their two children moved into the apartment along with Rachel’s chiropractic adjustment table. Rachel still sees a few patients a week.

They opened Mollie’s on November 25, 2011, Black Friday. Rachel admits that they “muscled their way” through the winter, but, overall, she says, “We’ve loved the restaurant. It’s fun!” Rachel describes her staff as, “More than competent. I trust them.” She notes that the menu has reverted to more of what it was when Mollie’s was in Corinth, with more home-baked goods. (Jacob’s banana bread was served during the interview.) The generous portion sizes are retained. With Rachel’s nutritional awareness that comes with her chiropractic training, there is an emphasis on fresh, good quality products, seasoned to show them to their best advantage.

The breakfast menu is typical American fare with some surprises. The Mountain Man Delight offers two eggs with a hamburger and home fries. Pancakes come in cranberry, banana nut, blueberry, granola and chocolate chip varieties. Among the offerings of three-egg omelettes are a Mediterranean version with olives, spinach, red peppers, and feta and a South of the Border interpretation with black beans, salsa and pepperjack cheese.

For lunch, the deli sandwiches, on white, wheat, or rye bread, are available as club sandwiches. Hot turkey and hot roast beef sandwiches with gravy are offered, as are Reubens, Rachels, Monte Cristos, and grilled chicken varieties. Half-pound burgers come with a range of toppings. Hot dogs come plain or with chili. The chili is also available on its own. There’s a chef’s salad. French fries come in white or sweet potato versions.

Dr. Reed clearly relishes the quirks of running a business in a small town. She loves the camaraderie of staff from other eating establishments coming to Mollie’s for lunch and that she and the children return the favor by going to those places for ice cream outings. She acknowledges that she and Jacob are putting their hearts and souls into the restaurant and that it’s lots of work, but that it just seems worth it when regulars are waiting at the door at 6 o’clock in the morning when Mollie’s opens at 6:30.

It’s a family operation. Jacob stopped by the table to report on the progress of his sister, who is staying with the Reed’s for the summer, in learning to use the cash register.

Rachel wants people to know that Mollie’s Mason Jar is a place where they can expect good food, good service, and friendly people. The banquet room, including bar, is available for parties, weddings, funeral receptions, meetings, and other events. She also would like people to understand that Mollie’s really isn’t that far away from Glens Falls or Saratoga.

The restaurant is open seven days a week, from 6:30am to 3pm on every day but Fridays, when they’re open till 8pm. Friday dinner specials include prime rib or Fish Fry Fridays with fresh-cut and breaded haddock. The phone number at Mollie’s is 696-2020.
