Forbes Magazine released May 1 its annual ranking of the best cities for job growth in the nation, the Glens Falls region placed eighth in the U.S. among 242 metropolitan statistical areas (MSA) with fewer than 150,000.<\/p>\n
The Glens Falls region, including Warren and Washington counties, was on the list with cities from Texas, Virginia, Wyoming, North Carolina, Indiana and Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n
Forbes generated the ranking with U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics data, and used a weighted summary for each region’s total job growth over 2011, over the previous five years, and previous ten years. The Glens Falls MSA ranked 59th overall last year.<\/p>\n
In a message to Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce members, President and CEO Peter Aust commented: “Regardless of whether some of the numbers may have been miscalculated, we can’t ignore the fact that our region is making significant strides in employment and is one of the regions of our country experiencing economic growth versus what many others are faced with – employment declines and economic stagnation.”
\n“We have weathered this economic downturn with heads held high,” Mr. Aust added, “and are now seeing the result of our region’s commitment to hard work and sound fiscal management, both in the private and public sector, that has positioned us for this growth.” Forbes indicated rankings are based on recent growth trends, mid-term growth, long-term growth and the region’s momentum. Rankings also were categorized by size since regional economies differ considerably due to their scale.<\/p>\n
Glens Falls City Mayor Jack Diamond said he is excited to have the city listed in the top eight. “We will use the ranking as a marketing tool to work to fill vacant downtown business properties, to promote Tech Meadows Industrial Park and to help stimulate residential real estate,” he said. “We’ll use the ranking with our Business Improvement District, with the Adirondack Gateway Council and in tourism promotion.”<\/p>\n
Mr. Diamond said the Glens Falls region’s stability and growth continues to be “a reflection of the collective effort of many people in our city, in our community and in our region.” He said, “This ranking gives us national exposure. Next year we want to do even better.”<\/p>\n
