General Manager Mike Thompson says the stations of Adirondack Broadcasting are aimed at different market segments who prefer variety in news, sports, talk and music.

By Jill Nagy

A new general manager with big plans has taken over the reins at Adirondack Broadcasting in Queensbury. Now six months into the job, Mike Thompson is full of enthusiasm about the “new age of local radio” and the five stations, three FM and two AM, that make up the Adirondack Broadcasting group.

“Local people make local decisions about what music to play,” he said, “We really bring it home.” In addition to music, the stations bring local news, sports, talk and information to their audiences. Each station is different, according to Thompson, and they operate fairly independently of one another. Although there is some sharing of content, each station aims at a different market and the signals do not bleed into each other.

Froggy 107.1 FM plays “modern country” music with news, weather and traffic reports at the beginning of each hour. They will also broadcast Adirondack Phantoms hockey games. Its target audience is listeners from 18 to 54 years of age.

The Point, at 100.3 FM, advertises a “modern mix” of music, which it terms “Hot Adult Contemporary.” It is aimed at 18- to 49-year-old listeners.

Q101.7 offers classic rock from the 1960’s to the 1980’s, aimed at the 25-65 age group. On AM, both WMML-AM, 1230, and WENU-AM, 1410, began broadcasting NBC news on April 1, replacing CNN. At 40 minutes past the hour, community correspondent Tim Celeste talks about local events from school plays to charity barbecues.

WMML, a Fox Sports station, plans to replace some of its sports talk programming with sports events, including New York Mets baseball, the Izod Indycar auto racing series including the Indianapolis 500 and, beginning next fall, Buffalo Bills football.

The expansion of sports offerings comes naturally to Thompson, who came to Adirondack Broadcasting following a 16-year career in sports management, most recently as manager of the Adirondack Phantoms from June 2009 until February 2011. Before that, he worked for the Florida Marlins baseball team, minor league baseball teams, and AHL hockey teams. Why did he move from sports to broadcasting? “It was time,” he replied.

WENU, referred to as “The U,” is undergoing a major transformation from a “classic country” music station to local news, talk and information. The country music will still air. However, from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, the station will feature Clark Howard, “America’s Consumer Champion.” Early morning listeners will hear Phil Hendrie, “The Man of 1,000 Voices,” from 1 a.m. to 4 a.m. At midnight, local broadcaster Brandon Mendelson hosts The Brandon Show featuring interviews with authors, sports figures and others. Sunday is a busy day on The U: a science show, a comics podcast, Meet the Press, Dr. Harry Fisch, and a wine show.

Thompson sees each radio station as a “conduit bringing together local businesses and their customers.” In fact, 85 percent of the advertising that supports Adirondack Broadcasting comes from local businesses, Thompson estimates.

In addition to new programming, there have been physical changes. A new broadcast tower has gone into operation, replacing the old one that was torn down in February.

The FM stations, with 25,000 watts of power, serve a listening area from Ticonderoga to Clifton Park. The AM stations, at 1,000 watts, broadcast primarily in Washington and Warren Counties. Thompson says that theirs are the strongest signals in their area. Adirondack Broadcasting is one of five station groups owned by Pamal Broadcasting. Sister groups are headquartered in Albany and Beacon NY, in Vermont, and in Pensacola FL. Their major competition comes from local stations in Glens Falls. Of Albany stations, he says, “we’re just far enough away so they leave us alone.”

The stations maintain webpages that display photos of the broadcasters and biographical information about them, stream what is currently being broadcast, and provide such information as the Teacher of the Week and school closings. Recently, Froggy’s webpage reported early morning host Jackie Donovan was planning a visit to the Parris Island, SC, Marine training camp in late March.
