Albany Medical College granted its Division of Neurosurgery departmental status, effective Jan. 1. According to Dr. Vincent Verdile, dean of Albany Medical College and executive vice president of health affairs at Albany Medical Center, the transition is in response to the continued growth and strong expertise of the neurosurgery program.<\/p>\n
“Albany Med’s neurosurgery program is comprised of world-renowned neurosurgeons who are leading the way in a wide range of subspecialities,” Verdile said. “Departmental status gives the program the recognition it deserves and will enable it to continue to grow its clinical, academic and research pursuits through the recruitment and retention of world-class subspecialty neurosurgeons and translational research physicians.”
\nDr. Alan Boulos, who served as chief of the Division of Neurosurgery, will serve as interim chair of the department.<\/p>\n
“On behalf of our entire neurosurgery team, I want to thank both Dean Vincent Verdile and Dr. Steven Stain, chair of the Department of Surgery, whose long-standing support of and commitment to our neurosurgery program have helped ensure that Albany Med can offer the most advanced neurosurgical services available in the region,” Boulos said.<\/p>\n
Boulos noted that over the last year, Albany Med’s neurological services have expanded to offer a new specialized operating room that allows high-definition CT scanning during surgeries, a new Neurological Intensive Care Unit, and expanded locations to see patients throughout the Capital Region, Glens Falls and Kingston.<\/p>\n
Albany Med’s Department of Neurosurgery is part of the Neurosciences Institute at Albany Med, a collaborative institute also comprising the Department of Neurology and Center for Neuropharmacology and Neuroscience.<\/p>\n
