The Adirondack Regional Chamber of
\nCommerce is seeking nominations for the
\nannual J. Walter Juckett Community Service
\nAward, a prestigious community award
\ndesigned to honor an individual who has
\n“selflessly gone above and beyond by contributing
\ntime and energy to help others.”<\/p>\n
To nominate a deserving volunteer, a
\nform must be submitted to the ARCC by
\nMonday, Jan. 6.<\/p>\n
ARCC officials said forms are available by
\ncontacting the organization at 798-1761 or
\nsending an e-mail to Greg Chanese, ARCC
\nmarketing and communications manager,
\nat gchanese@adirondackchamber.org.
\nOn the form, the nomination should explain why the nominee should be considered, using the below criteria:<\/p>\n
(1) The nominee’s profile should demonstrate significant contributions to the community in the field of human services, education, business, or industry.<\/p>\n
(2) The nominee’s contributions should be substantial and enduring.<\/p>\n
(3) The nominee should reflect the admiration of his or her peers.<\/p>\n
Neither the nominee nor nominator are required to be a member of the ARCC in order to be considered or to win.<\/p>\n
The 2014 J. Walter Juckett Award will be presented at the Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce J. Walter Juckett award banquet on February 6 at Heritage Hall in the Glens Falls Civic Center.<\/p>\n
Juckett was born on in 1908 in Mittineague, Mass., where he spent his childhood years in this central area of Massachusetts. He graduated in 1930 from Norwich University, Northfield, Vt., where he was, and remains, the only individual to graduate from this military college with the highest academic achievement while serving as the cadet major.<\/p>\n
Upon receiving an engineering degree, Juckett began his career at the Hurlbut Paper Co., where his father, Frank A. Juckett, served as president. During the Great Depression, the Juckett father-son team was enticed to move to Hudson Falls, to take over active management of the Sandy Hill Iron and Brass Works. The Jucketts quickly established Sandy Hill’s reputation in the paper industry and in the local community.<\/p>\n
Chamber officials said J. Walter Juckett had a remarkable business career and was recognized as a major community leader in his adopted home, the Village of Hudson Falls, and the entire region. His leadership and commitment transgressed a wide range of civic, charitable, religious, political, business and educational activities. He was recognized with honors for his work and contributions to the Boy Scouts of America, New York Business Development Corporation, Salvation Army, Norwich University, Presbyterian Church, Hudson Falls Central School and many other organizations.<\/p>\n
He served as a director of the Lake George Opera, and was a major force in The Hyde Collection Capital Campaign. He was also an active and engaged participant for several years with the Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce.<\/p>\n
