The Hyde Collection received a $10,000 payment from the Alfred Z. Solomon Charitable Trust to fund its “Memories in the Making 2014” Alzheimer’s outreach program.<\/p>\n
Memories in the Making is a program developed by the Alzheimer’s Association of Orange County, Calif., and is being implemented at facilities around the country as an impactful approach to enhancing quality of life for Alzheimer’s sufferers.<\/p>\n
June Leary, curator of education at The Hyde Collection, attended facilitator training for this program in 2012 at the Alzheimer’s Association NENY.<\/p>\n
\nThe goal of the program, she said, is to facilitate communication, a skill often lost early in the progression of the disease. Inability to communicate causes those with memory disorders to withdraw or act out in frustration.<\/p>\n
The act of painting stimulates the imagination and creativity, and has been proven to have a calming effect that enables the individual to access and discuss memories, she said. “We are so thankful to again receive this important support,” says Hyde director Charles A. Guerin. “It enables us to reach out to this segment of our visitors and offers creative options for those with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. This is a stellar example of how the arts can better the lives of the population as well as an opportunity for us to give back to our community.”<\/p>\n
Participants and their caregivers meet in the art studio at the museum or in their activity room at residential facilities. The rooms are set with a watercolor painting set at each seat, and conversation is inspired by looking at photographs and artwork. The participants are encouraged to paint and the paintings begin to tell a story.<\/p>\n
All paintings are shared at the end of an hour long session, and notes are kept to document the stories told.<\/p>\n
The program is open to families who are care giving at home and to residential facilities. Memories in the Making is most beneficial to the patient as a weekly or bi-weekly activity, and is available on site at the museum or off site at residential facilities, adult day care sites, and community centers, Hyde officials said. Families or groups may schedule a program by request.<\/p>\n
