The New York State Energy Research and
\nDevelopment Authority (NYSERDA) launched
\nthe NY-Sun PV Trainers Network to provide
\ntraining to help local officials streamline permitting
\nand inspection processes and to help
\nfirefighters safely work on buildings where
\nsolar is installed.<\/p>\n
The training is part of a statewide strategy
\nto create a sustainable solar industry that will
\nnot rely on government subsidies. It is part of
\nthe state’s NY-Sun initiative.<\/p>\n
The program aims to reduce some of the
\nobstacles to mainstream adoption of solar energy
\nby local governments, particularly those
\nrelated to the time and costs associated with
\nPV permitting, installation, inspection and
\napprovals by local municipalities.
\nOfficials said the training is designed to
\nhelp streamline the approval process for local
\ncommunities and will enable them to meet
\ntheir community economic development, job
\ncreation and sustainability goals while stimulating
\nwide-scale adoption of cost-effective
\nsolar PV installations.<\/p>\n
The workshops begin in August, and will
\nbe provided to participants for free or at a
\nminimal cost.
\n“Providing tools and training for local
\nofficials involved in approving solar installations
\nwill help overcome market barriers for
\ninstallers and will streamline the process and
\nreduce costs,” said John B. Rhodes, president
\nand CEO, NYSERDA.<\/p>\n
The training is a partnership of NYSERDA,
\nMeister Consultants Group, Entech Engineering,
\nthe City University of New York (CUNY)
\nand other academic institutions.<\/p>\n
“NYS is currently fifth in the country for
\nsolar jobs, with a significant amount of PV applications
\nin the queue,” said Tria Case, lead
\nimplementer of the NYSolar Smart Program
\nand University Director of Sustainability.<\/p>\n
“CUNY is proud to have teamed up once again
\nwith NYSERDA and our many partners to
\nprovide a training network for officials across
\nthe state that will open the door to more clean renewable energy and enable jurisdictions
\nto send the message that they are open for
\nsolar business.”<\/p>\n
The NY-Sun PV Trainers Network offers
\ntraining to a wide variety of audiences involved
\nin solar energy permitting, installation,
\ninspection and approval processes, including
\nlocal policy makers, code enforcement
\nofficials, inspectors, engineers, architects
\nand first responders. The training will be
\nprovided over a three-year period across New
\nYork state.<\/p>\n
The training and workshops include:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Introduction to solar policy for planners,
\nadministrators and code officials.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Developing a solar strategy for planners,
\nadministrators and code officials.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Solar PV permitting and Inspection Methods
\nfor electrical and building code officials.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Solar PV engineering structural considerations
\nand plan review for architects, engineers and installers.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Safety and fire considerations for solar PV
\nfor firefighters and first responders.<\/p>\n
Training classes will range from one-hour
\nwebinars to half-day workshops and two-day
\nadvanced training, each tailored to the needs
\nof the audience.<\/p>\n
In addition, the network offers in-depth
\ntechnical training assistance on solar PV
\npolicy-related topics such as:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Incorporating solar energy into a comprehensive
\nplan.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Drafting solar development regulations.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Streamlining and troubleshooting support
\nof solar permitting and inspection processes.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Identifying local solar financing options.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Procuring solar for municipal facilities.<\/p>\n
