The Lake George Land Conservancy
\n(LGLC) said it has had a banner year so far,
\nand anticipates more to come before the end
\nof 2014.<\/p>\n

In reporting on activities this year, officials
\nsaid that in the past nine months, LGLC has
\nprotected 462 acres of Lake George watershed
\nlands through partnerships, purchases,
\ndonations and conservation easements, and
\nis working on plans to protect over 750 acres
\nin the near future.<\/p>\n

Land conservation projects were completed
\nin five towns around Lake George,
\nincluding Bolton, Hague, Putnam, Fort Ann,
\nand the Town of Lake George. The projects
\nprotect in-tact forests, wetlands, rocky slopes
\nand ridges, and streams, as well as important
\nwildlife habitats.
\nIn addition to its direct conservation work,
\nLGLC achieved land trust accreditation in
\nAugust from the Land Trust Accreditation
\nCommission, an independent program of the
\nLand Trust Alliance. This distinction signifies
\nLGLC’s commitment to meeting national
\nstandards for excellence, as a transparent,
\nefficient, and trustworthy organization, officials
\nsaid.<\/p>\n

All of this also comes as the organization
\nprepares for a change in leadership. Executive
\nDirector Nancy Williams will retire this
\nyear and LGLC’s board of directors hope to
\nhave a new executive director in place by
\nJanuary.<\/p>\n

“My retirement is bittersweet,” said Williams.
\n“My spirit will always be here at Lake
\nGeorge, and in the memories of some of our
\ngreatest projects: working with an unlikely
\npartner to protect the Padanarum lands;
\ndiscovering the resident bobcat at the Last
\nGreat Shoreline and using that (and unfortunate
\nleg traps set for the area’s beavers)
\nas inspiration for the development of Lake
\nGeorge’s first managed wildlife refuge; and the summer that I worked alongside our
\nstewards to create the Friendship Garden
\nat Peggy’s Point. Most of all I will miss the
\npeople who made these projects possible.”<\/p>\n

Completed Projects in 2014 include:<\/p>\n

Putnam – Last Great Shoreline. More than
\n30 people took part in a celebration at the
\nHague Community Center on June 13th,
\nmarking the end to a five-year fund-raising
\ncampaign and giving thanks to the 400-plus
\npeople who contributed to the protection of
\nthe Last Great Shoreline in Putnam.<\/p>\n

The 351-acre property, which includes
\nJumping Rock and is located directly across
\nthe lake from Hague, was purchased in 2009
\nfor $4 million. The final mortgage payment
\nwas made February 27, 2014.<\/p>\n

An essential linkage between the Last
\nGreat Shoreline property and LGLC’s Gull Bay
\nPreserve to its south was achieved through a
\npurchase of three acres in April. A throughtrail
\nhas since been created and the whole
\ntrail system of nearly six miles is now open
\nto the public. The trail system also includes
\naccess from the water, thanks to a new dock
\nthat was installed in July.<\/p>\n

The LA Group, a landscape architecture
\nand planning firm out of Saratoga Springs,
\npartnered with LGLC this summer to assist
\nin the development of a master plan for the
\nwildlife refuge, providing guidance on land
\nconservation goals, educational tools, and
\npublic access. The LA Group is contributing
\ntheir expertise at no cost.<\/p>\n

Fort Ann – Donation. David Van Hart of
\nPilot Knob donated 63 acres in Fort Ann to
\nLGLC in June. Located off of Ridge Road
\n(Route 9L) just south of Pilot Knob Road,
\nthe property serves as a southern anchor
\nfor the greater Pilot Knob ridge area, which
\nis of conservation interest to LGLC as Lake
\nGeorge watershed lands and its visible slopes and ridges.<\/p>\n

Though not currently open to the public,
\nLGLC hopes to connect this land to its popular
\nSchumann Preserve at Pilot Knob less
\nthan 1.5 miles to the north.<\/p>\n

Hague – Purchase. LGLC recently completed
\nan amazingly successful fund-raising
\ncampaign for the purchase of 120 acres in the
\nSabbath Day Point-Silver Bay area from the
\nTerzian family. In just three months, nearly
\n$90,000 has been raised by neighbors and others
\nwho wished to see this land protected and
\navailable for public use. LGLC will purchase
\nthe land for $75,000 and use the additional
\nfunds to cover legal fees and stewardship
\nprojects.<\/p>\n

The property is adjacent to uplands owned
\nby New York state and the Silver Bay YMCA.
\nIts purchase by LGLC ensures the protection
\nof a Lake George tributary, and will provide
\npublic access to beautiful forests and ridges.
\nIn partnership with Silver Bay, LGLC hopes
\nto create a marked trail system from Route
\n9N to connect with Silver Bay’s existing trails
\nand scenic lookouts.<\/p>\n

Lake George – Donation. The owner of
\na 175-acre Lake George property known as
\nMatty’s Mountain has agreed to donate the
\nland to LGLC, completing the protection of
\nthe headwaters of West Brook in the south
\nend of Lake George. The property is bordered
\nby LGLC’s Berry Pond Preserve on three sides, making it an ideal addition to the preserve,
\nand already includes trails used by the local
\nsnowmobile club.<\/p>\n

LGLC purchased the adjacent 1,400-acre
\nBerry Pond Preserve in 2008 for $2.654 million
\nwith the understanding that, as a land
\nof interest to New York state, it would be sold
\nand added to the Lake George Wild Forest.
\nA contract with the state was completed and
\nits sale for $1.7 million is now anticipated by
\nthe end of 2014. LGLC also anticipates selling
\nthe Matty’s Mountain piece to the state in the
\nfuture to be added to the Berry Pond lands.<\/p>\n

Bolton – Easement Donation. A partnership
\nbetween a landowner, a town and a
\nland trust has resulted in the protection of
\nan 84-acre property within the Edgecomb
\nPond watershed, the drinking water source
\nfor the Town of Bolton. LGLC Advisory Board
\nMember Rebecca Smith purchased the forested
\nproperty with the intention to donate
\na conservation easement to LGLC and then
\nsell the protected land to the town at a greatly
\nreduced price.<\/p>\n

Since nearly all of the land’s water runs
\ndirectly into Edgecomb Pond, its protection
\nmeans the safeguarding of the Town’s
\ndrinking water. The property also adjoins
\nNew York state’s Cat and Thomas Mountains
\nPreserve, and will provide additional public
\nrecreational resources and protected wildlife
\nhabitat.<\/p>\n
