CAMPBELL<\/p>\n<p>There are big changes underway at the<br \/>\nold-fashioned ice cream stand that has graced<br \/>\n1133 Route 9 in Queensbury for more than 50<br \/>\nyears, changes that will expand Martha&#8217;s Dandee<br \/>\nCreme products locally and potentially<br \/>\nacross the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone traveling past Six Flags Great Escape<br \/>\nin Queensbury may notice excavations<br \/>\nunderway that will allow a 2,700-square-foot<br \/>\naddition to the soft-serve business that predates<br \/>\nthe amusement park, and which sits on<br \/>\nwhat was once a chicken farm.<\/p>\n<p>Dennis Lafontaine, who owns the business<br \/>\nwith his wife Elizabeth, said that when they<br \/>\npurchased Martha&#8217;s in 2009, he knew they<br \/>\nwould make enhancements to the brand, one<br \/>\nscoop at a time.<br \/>\n&#8220;My philosophy is: Do one thing at a time<br \/>\nand blow it out of the water, but don&#8217;t expand<br \/>\ntoo fast,&#8221; said Lafontaine. &#8220;Then we can focus<br \/>\non the next thing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>First step: Martha&#8217;s will return to serving<br \/>\nfood.<br \/>\n&#8220;There was no restaurant at Martha&#8217;s when<br \/>\nmy parents owned it from 1982 to 1999,&#8221; he<br \/>\nsaid. &#8220;But there was food service under other<br \/>\nmanagement.&#8221;<br \/>\nLafontaine said The Grill at Martha&#8217;s will<br \/>\nserve homemade burgers, Philly steak, sausage<br \/>\nwith peppers, fresh-cut french fries, hot<br \/>\ndogs and other items.<br \/>\nPlans call for an elevator to transport food<br \/>\nand supplies to the basement for storage and<br \/>\npreparation.<\/p>\n<p>There will be no tables inside, but a new<br \/>\nheated pavilion will seat 80 to 100 customers,<br \/>\nhe said. Martha&#8217;s Dandee Creme will continue<br \/>\nto be open seasonally, from Memorial Day<br \/>\nto Columbus Day, although ice cream sandwiches<br \/>\nwill be available online and in shops,<br \/>\nyet to be determined, year-round.<\/p>\n<p>The next step is to add Martha&#8217;s brand of<br \/>\nice cream sandwiches using the 37 flavors of homemade soft serve that Martha&#8217;s has<br \/>\nbecome famous for, and not just among Lake<br \/>\nGeorge visitors and residents, Lafontaine said.<br \/>\nTrip Advisor online named Martha&#8217;s Dandee<br \/>\nCreme one of the 10 best ice cream parlors<br \/>\nin the U.S.<br \/>\n&#8220;Our name has become known outside of<br \/>\nthis area and we are meeting the demand,&#8221;<br \/>\nLafontaine said.<\/p>\n<p>The ice cream sandwich product line will<br \/>\nbe wholesaled and distributed in and out of<br \/>\nNew York state. Lafontaine said the demand<br \/>\ncould take the Martha&#8217;s brand practically<br \/>\nanywhere. Packages of 12 custom-made sandwiches<br \/>\nin the flavors of choice can be ordered<br \/>\nonline and promptly shipped anywhere on<br \/>\ndry ice.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When word first got out in the media about<br \/>\nour plans, our website received 36,000 hits in<br \/>\njust one day,&#8221; said Lafontaine.<\/p>\n<p>When construction is complete, Martha&#8217;s<br \/>\nwill have added five new windows for ice<br \/>\ncream service (there are eight now) and<br \/>\nfive windows for food service. The staff now<br \/>\nnumbers 25 but will double to about 50 when<br \/>\nin full swing, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Lafontaine said Martha&#8217;s will remain a<br \/>\nfamily business. The oldest son, age 22,<br \/>\nworks in the business full time and yearround.<br \/>\nThe next oldest, age 20, is at Oneonta<br \/>\nCollege studying food service. And there are<br \/>\ntwo younger children who may take to the<br \/>\nbusiness.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want to build a business where people<br \/>\ncome by and feel excited by our products,&#8221;<br \/>\nsaid Lafontaine. &#8220;Giving people ice cream and<br \/>\nmaking them happy is a cool job.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Lafontaine has contracted with three firms<br \/>\nfor the building project: Ellsworth &amp; Son Excavating<br \/>\nInc. of Lake George, Rucinski Hall<br \/>\nArchitecture of Saratoga Springs, and Hilltop<br \/>\nConstruction of Hudson Falls.<\/p>\n<p>The company website is www.marthasdandeecreme.com.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> Martha&#8217;s Dandee Creme on Route 9 in Queensbury will have a new look in 2015.
