HARMAN, CPA<\/p>\n<p>The look on the subcontractor&#8217;s face was priceless<br \/>\nas he was forced to reckon with the fact the<br \/>\nman sitting across from him not only knew the<br \/>\njob site, but also the contract and the business.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the trades were not prepared to have the<br \/>\naccountant turned superintendent running the<br \/>\njob site, but in the end we all managed to stay<br \/>\non schedule, on budget and deliver an award winning,<br \/>\ngreat product.<\/p>\n<p>It is seldom that your CPA has actually built<br \/>\na house, rehabbed a historical building in a<br \/>\nblighted area, developed acreage into a community<br \/>\nor known the struggles of shoveling snow<br \/>\nbefore starting construction for the day.<br \/>\nHow can a CPA help a contractor? Many ways.<br \/>\nWe are schooled in organization, budgets, controlling<br \/>\ncosts and business processes. Often times a<br \/>\nfew questions about your business can improve<br \/>\nthe bottom line.<\/p>\n<p>How can you make the project or process better?<br \/>\nWhat project did you complete which you are<br \/>\nmost proud of? I still think of the time I finished<br \/>\nmy first house and closed on it without creating<br \/>\na punch list. We had no items to correct from the<br \/>\ncustomer&#8217;s walk-through. It was not unusual for<br \/>\nthe customer to come through and pick apart<br \/>\nthe house and look for missing options, paint<br \/>\ntouch-ups and other cosmetic issues before the<br \/>\nhouse closed.<\/p>\n<p>However, we made a commitment on our job<br \/>\nsite to finish the home 100 percent and not have<br \/>\nany open items. This shaved three days to a week<br \/>\noff our construction time frame because it was<br \/>\ndifficult to get the customer to come back timely<br \/>\nand it also helped the house close on time. Each<br \/>\nhouse cost us roughly $300 a day to finance, so<br \/>\nthrough this process we were saving a minimum<br \/>\nof $900 just in financing costs of construction. I<br \/>\nwas very proud of the first house I completed in<br \/>\nthis manner and it eventually became our norm.<\/p>\n<p>What project is your most profitable? Sometimes<br \/>\nthe project you complete that you are<br \/>\nmost proud of is also the most profitable but not<br \/>\nalways. A contractor was selected for some larger<br \/>\ncommercial jobs about an hour and a half away<br \/>\nfrom their office. Normally their jobs were within<br \/>\n20 minutes of the office.<\/p>\n<p>They ended up not making very much money<br \/>\non the job. For one, they were subject to the<br \/>\ndrawn out payment schedule of the general contractor.<br \/>\nSecondly, the employees would leave the<br \/>\njob early to get home at a decent time, but still<br \/>\nrecord a full day&#8217;s work. Thirdly, the owner was<br \/>\nnot as present on the job because it was further<br \/>\naway. The jobs they made the most money on were<br \/>\nclose to home, with general contractors they were<br \/>\nused to working with and where he was on site<br \/>\nmost of the time managing the project.<\/p>\n<p>How big do you want to get? This is a question<br \/>\nfew truly ask. How big of a company can you lead<br \/>\nand manage? Fewer still ask this question and<br \/>\ngive an honest answer.<\/p>\n<p>The answer to both of these questions will<br \/>\nfuel your strategy, market, profit and business<br \/>\nlife. This is where a CPA can be invaluable. A<br \/>\nCPA builds relationships with bankers, insurance<br \/>\nagents, real estate agents, lawyers and many<br \/>\nother professionals and business owners through<br \/>\nnormal everyday activities that are a resource to<br \/>\nhelp you grow. Accounting is truly understanding<br \/>\nevery facet of business and finding a way to<br \/>\nquantify it.<\/p>\n<p>A CPA has the resources to help you grow and<br \/>\nthe insight to help you determine if bigger is really<br \/>\nbetter. When you are ready, the CPA can help you<br \/>\npass a successful business to the next generation.<br \/>\nHow? A CPA can show you how to control the<br \/>\nmoney that goes out to pay bills and help set up<br \/>\nsystems that protect you from theft and fraud.<\/p>\n<p>They can train you, your family and company<br \/>\nhow to look at your income statement, balance<br \/>\nsheet and statement of cash flows to understand<br \/>\nthe overall business.<\/p>\n<p>We can help setup job costing and per job profit<br \/>\nand loss statements.
