Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo this month announced
\n$500,000 in grants will be awarded to
\ncommunities in the Adirondacks to enhance
\nbusiness development and access to the
\nstate’s newly-acquired former Finch, Pruyn
\n& Co. lands.<\/p>\n
The Adirondack Park Upper Hudson
\nRecreation Hub grants, provided by the Nature
\nConservancy, will be used to fund nine
\nprojects that increase tourism opportunities,
\nsupport small business growth and expand
\nrecreational offerings, strengthening the
\nregion’s local economy and supporting jobs.<\/p>\n
Included among the projects is $13,250
\nto the town of Johnsburg in Warren County
\nfor equipment to be used by a local guide
\nservice, North Creek Rafting Co. LLC, to
\nprovide guided inflatable kayak trips on the
\nUpper Hudson River between Newcomb and
\nthe confluence with the Indian River.
\n“The Town of Johnsburg is thrilled to be
\nreceiving this grant and I express my appreciation
\nto Gov. Cuomo and The Nature
\nConservancy,” said Johnsburg Supervisor Ron
\nVanselow. “This grant will surely enhance our
\nlocal economy by providing another way for
\nvisitors to our area to experience these newly
\nacquired lands. This is a great opportunity
\nfor all of us.”<\/p>\n
State officials said the trip is suitable for
\nbeginners and is made possible by take-outs
\nat two locations south of Newcomb – the
\niron bridge about seven miles from the Lake
\nHarris put-in and the Indian River property,
\nupstream of the confluence of the Hudson
\nand Indian Rivers and the heavy whitewater
\nof the Hudson Gorge.<\/p>\n
“Preserving the wilderness of the Adirondacks
\nwhile promoting access and growth within the region is a generational legacy that
\ncontinues today,” Cuomo said. “These projects
\nwill make it easier for visitors to hike, fish,
\nhunt and enjoy the unparalleled landscape
\nof the Adirondacks, while boosting communities’
\neconomies all across the region. I thank
\nThe Nature Conservancy for their important
\nand continued support of the Adirondacks
\nand New York state.”<\/p>\n
The Adirondack Park Upper Hudson Recreation
\nHub grants support business-oriented
\ncommunity development projects ranging
\nfrom equipping a new guide service in Newcomb
\nand inflatable kayak trips on the Upper
\nHudson River, to establishing equestrian
\nstaging areas in North Hudson and Long Lake.<\/p>\n
The Nature Conservancy acquired the
\nformer Finch lands in 2007. To protect the
\nland for future generations, Cuomo announced
\nin 2012 that the state had reached
\nan agreement with The Nature Conservancy
\nto acquire 69,000 acres of the lands and other
\nThe Nature Conservancy holdings over a five year
\nperiod.<\/p>\n
Department of Environmental Conservation
\nCommissioner Joe Martens said the
\nAdirondacks “have long been a popular
\ndestination for individuals and families of all
\nabilities, and the former Finch lands will significantly
\nexpand outdoor recreation opportunities
\nand support the regional economy.”<\/p>\n
Michael Carr, executive director of the
\nNature Conservancy’s Adirondack Chapter,
\nsaid his organization “is delighted to continue
\nits work with local communities, regional
\ntourism offices, and state agencies to unlock
\nthe potential for spectacular lands to play a
\nnew role in the park’s outdoor recreation and
