New York state has set aside $70 million
\nto fund 68 bicycle, pedestrian and multi-use
\npath transportation projects in New York,
\nincluding one in Glens Falls.<\/p>\n

The projects, funded by the Federal Highway
\nAdministration, which leverage a total
\ninvestment of $103.7 million, will promote
\nwalking and biking, and boost tourism and
\neconomic development opportunities in dozens
\nof communities across the state.<\/p>\n

The project in the city of Glens Falls
\nincludes Fire Road, Crandall Park and
\nKensington Road Elementary School bicycle
\nand pedestrian improvements in the amount
\nof $480,000.
\n“These projects will help communities
\nbecome more walkable and bicycle friendly,
\nas well as show off the natural beauty that
\nexists in every corner of this state,” Gov.
\nAndrew Cuomo said. “I thank the Federal
\nHighway Administration and our representatives
\nfor helping the state secure this funding
\nso that residents and visitors alike can enjoy
\nNew York like never before.”<\/p>\n

The projects include the addition of accessible
\nsidewalks, improved pedestrian access
\nto public transportation services, construction
\nof new bicycle and pedestrian facilities
\nand the preservation and conversion of
\nabandoned railroad corridors for trail use.<\/p>\n

State Department of Transportation
\nCommissioner Joan McDonald said, “We are
\ninvesting in projects that meet the increasing
\npublic demand for walkable and bikeable
\ncommunities, while promoting sustainable
\ntransportation alternatives, tourism and
\nrecreation, and local and regional economic
\ndevelopment. Governor Cuomo has shown a
\nhistoric commitment to investing in transportation
\ninfrastructure in New York State,
\nincluding making bicycle and pedestrian
\nsafety a priority.”<\/p>\n

The funds are made available to the
\nState through the Federal Highway Administration
\nand are administered by the State
\nDepartment of Transportation. The program
\nprovides up to 80 percent of the cost of each
\nproject, with the remaining share coming
\nfrom the project sponsor. The funds are dedicated
\nfor strategic investments in transportation
\nalternatives and with a local sponsor
\nmatch of more than $33.6 million, support
\na total investment of nearly $103.7 million.<\/p>\n

The projects announced were chosen
\nthrough a competitive solicitation process
\nand rated on established criteria that
\nincluded public benefit and community
\nsupport for the project; connectivity to an
\nexisting transportation system; how well
\nthe proposed improvements benefit walking
\nand bicycling; impact on local or regional
\neconomies; availability of matching funds;
\nand ability to deliver the project within federally
\nrequired time frames. 135 applications
\nwere received.<\/p>\n

Selected projects relate to one or more
\nof the following categories: on-road and
\noff-road trail facilities for pedestrians,
\nbicyclists and other non-motorized forms
\nof transportation; infrastructure-related
\nprojects and systems that provide safe routes
\nfor non-drivers to access daily needs; use of
\nabandoned railroad corridors for surface transportation
\nrelated trails; scenic byway
\nturnouts and viewing areas; safe routes to
\nschool; construction of boulevards and complete
\nstreets thoroughfares; and storm water
