Apex Solar in Queensbury moved up the
\nstreet to larger quarters and a chance to
\nconsolidate its office, warehouse and retail
\nshowroom in one place.<\/p>\n

The new headquarters are at 64 Main
\nSt., near Northway Exit 18. The business
\nis renting the new space.
\nStan Dovert, one of the owners of Apex
\nSolar, also owns the old building at 52 Main
\nSt., which is now the home of a new tenant,
\nPatriot Multisport.<\/p>\n

Apex designs and installs solar electric
\npower systems, most of them at residences.
\nThis month, they unrolled a new rental
\nprogram and have already signed up the
\nfirst customer. Ben Sopczyk, director of
\nmarketing at Apex, explained that the
\nlease system requires no money upfront
\nand is designed so that the homeowner’s
\nrent payments are less than the energy
\nsavings.
\nGenerally, there is a 20-year lease for a
\nsystem designed to cancel out the cost of
\nelectricity from the grid.
\nHe said typically, the homeowner will
\npay a modest access fee to the electric utility
\ncompany for the right to draw electricity
\nfrom the grid when it is needed. When
\nthe solar system is providing electricity,
\nthe homeowner gets a credit from the
\nutility company on a kilowatt for kilowatt
\nbasis.<\/p>\n

Once a year, usually around April 1, the
\nhomeowner and utility company “settle
\nup.” According to Sopczyk, for 60 to 70
\npercent of customers, the net bill is zero.
\nAt the end of the lease period, Sopczyk
\nsaid, the solar system will still be producing
\nelectricity at about 85 percent of the
\nrate it did when new. At that point, the
\nhomeowner has three choices: to purchase
\nthe system at a discounted price, to renew
\nthe lease, or to have Apex take back the
\nsystem.<\/p>\n

A fourth option would be to replace the system with a new one but, Sopczyk said,
\nhe usually recommends making up the 15
\npercent decline in production by reducing
\nenergy use.<\/p>\n

Most customers still purchase their
\nsolar systems and take advantage of available
\ntax credits. Sopczyk sees the lease
\narrangement as a good option for people
\nwith a low debt tolerance and little use for
\nthe tax credit.<\/p>\n

Apex does not manufacture systems,
\njust designs and installs them. They have
\n30 fulltime installers on their staff and,
\non most days, four or five installations
\nare in progress. Most installations take
\nonly one day, according to Sopczyk. They
\nalso do installations on contract for national
\ncompanies with no local installation
\nstaff. Whenever possible, they use United
\nStates-made panels, he said, and they have
\n“unique installation methods.”<\/p>\n

The next project for the company is a
\nrevamp of its webpage, ApexSolarPower.
