West<br \/>\nMountain opened. Spencer Montgomery,<br \/>\none of the partners in Apex Capital, which<br \/>\nowns the facility, as well as on-site manager<br \/>\nof the ski center, said he was determined to<br \/>\nopen the mountain earlier than many other<br \/>\nski sites in the area.<br \/>\nHe opened Nov. 30.<\/p>\n<p>The 2013-14 winter was the first season under his management.<br \/>\n&#8220;It was a good season, no complaints. We<br \/>\nhad a decent turnout,&#8221; said Montgomery.<br \/>\nThe center broke even financially, which<br \/>\nwas a positive sign.<\/p>\n<p>Moving forward, Montgomery and his<br \/>\nteam have created a vision for West Mountain.<br \/>\n&#8220;We are really trying to rebrand it as a<br \/>\nfamily mountain,&#8221; he said.<br \/>\nLast year saw increases in both season<br \/>\npass sales and student classes, Montgomery<br \/>\nnoted. Season pass sales were up by about 20<br \/>\npercent. The number of students participating<br \/>\nin after-school ski programs increased<br \/>\nfrom 900 to approximately 1,400.<\/p>\n<p>To get West Mountain ready for the season,<br \/>\na total of 5,000 feet of pipeline was<br \/>\ninstalled to help facilitate snowmaking.<br \/>\nThis triples the capacity of the previous<br \/>\npipeline, allowing for more snow to be delivered<br \/>\nfaster, said Montgomery.<\/p>\n<p>West Mountain hired Andrew Van Bourgodien<br \/>\nas the new food and beverage director.<br \/>\nVan Bourgodien oversees operations at<br \/>\nthe East Slope Bar and Eatery. The menu<br \/>\nfeatures traditional pub fare, such as hamburgers<br \/>\nand buffalo wings, along with some<br \/>\nmore refined dishes such as lobster rolls,<br \/>\nNew York strip steak, and vegetable Napoleon.<\/p>\n<p>During the off-season, Van Bourgodien<br \/>\noperates Up River Caf\u00c3\u00a9 in Lake Luzerne.<br \/>\nEast Slope Bar and Eatery books holiday<br \/>\nparties and more. It&#8217;s open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Montgomery had many plans for West<br \/>\nMountain when he first stepped into the<br \/>\nnew role. He previously considered adding<br \/>\na zip line at the ski center, in order to<br \/>\ndraw crowds during the summer and raise<br \/>\nrevenue. But Montgomery has slowed down<br \/>\nhis expansion plans.<br \/>\n&#8220;Yes, it&#8217;s something that in the future we&#8217;d possibility like to do,&#8221; said Montgomery of<br \/>\nthe zip line. &#8220;Our focus is really on building<br \/>\na ski center.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By continuing to focus on customer<br \/>\nservice and a family friendly model, making<br \/>\nimprovements to the mountain, and bringing<br \/>\nin highly qualified staff, Montgomery<br \/>\nbelieves West Mountain is positioning itself<br \/>\nto be a ski center that families will enjoy<br \/>\ncoming to for years to come.<\/p>\n<p>David Wenn was hired to run and coach<br \/>\nthe ski racing program at West Mountain.<br \/>\nWenn is a level 300 USSA-certified ski<br \/>\ncoach. He is the woman&#8217;s U16 alpine ski<br \/>\nracing coach for the Vail Ski and Snowboard<br \/>\nClub in Colorado, and founder of the National<br \/>\nSports Academy in Lake Placid. Wenn<br \/>\nhas many plans to make West Mountain<br \/>\nRacing successful.<\/p>\n<p>The ski center will host 12 races this year,<br \/>\nincluding two college races and a Super G<br \/>\ncamp.
