New York state has launch Community
\nSolar NY, a new effort under the NY-Sun
\ninitiative to make implementing solar easier
\nand more affordable for communities across
\nthe state.<\/p>\n
The program launched in December
\nsupports community projects known as “Solarize”
\ncampaigns – locally-organized community
\noutreach efforts aimed at getting a
\ncritical mass of area homes and businesses
\nto install solar, state officials said.<\/p>\n
“Transitioning to affordable and clean
\nenergy is a large part of our goal of building
\na better New York state – and today we’re
\ntaking another step forward to make that
\ngoal a reality,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.
\n“By
\nhelping local communities implement solar
\ntechnologies, we are providing residents
\nthroughout the state with greater access
\nto clean energy without the burden of high
\ncosts. Community Solar NY is another initiative
\nthat will help us deliver on our promise
\nto build a cleaner and greener Empire State,
\nand I encourage all interested communities
\nto join us by taking part in this effort.”<\/p>\n
Solarize campaigns bring together widespread
\ncommunity outreach and education,
\ncompetitive installer selection, and a
\nlimited-time offer to bring more customers
\nto solar and provide significant cost savings.<\/p>\n
Cuomo said Community Solar NY
\nwill support these campaigns by providing
\nmarketing materials, technical assistance
\nand funding; and by sharing best practices
\nto help community projects succeed.<\/p>\n
John B. Rhodes, president and CEO of
\nthe New York State Energy Research and
\nDevelopment Authority (NYSERDA), said,
\nthe program “is an innovative approach to
\nspur local communities to come together
\nto install and encourage the installation
\nof solar in homes, businesses and neighborhoods.<\/p>\n
A new component of Governor Cuomo’s NY-Sun initiative, it is the latest
\npiece of a comprehensive program to help
\nthe State advance toward installing 3,000
\nmegawatts of solar by 2023.”<\/p>\n
Communities across the state already
\nhave had success with early Solarize efforts.
\nCommunity Solar NY seeks to encourage
\nmany more communities to follow their
\nlead.<\/p>\n
Community Solar NY also includes
\nK-Solar, a joint partnership between the
\nNew York Power Authority (NYPA) and
\nNYSERDA, working with the New York State
\nEducation Department to help schools
\nlower their energy costs by going solar.<\/p>\n
NYPA is offering every school district free
\nenergy advisory services and in collaboration
\nwith school personnel will determine
\nif solar energy is suitable and cost-effective
\nfor their district and to help secure the most
\nattractive solar financing. As of the end of
\nNovember, 194 school districts, representing
\nmore than 800 schools in 51 counties, have
\nsigned up to participate in K-Solar, according
\nto state officials.<\/p>\n
Gil C. Quiniones, NYPA president and
\nCEO, said, by using Community Solar NY,
\n“homeowners and businesses can combine
\nefforts to go solar more affordably in a similar
\nway K-Solar is now bringing many school
\ndistricts together for cost-effective solar
\ninstallations. As K-Solar schools spread the
\nclean solar energy message, this will spark a
\ngreater interest in all that Community Solar
\nNY has to offer.”<\/p>\n
