As 2015 begins, the Adirondack Regional
\nChamber of Commerce is taking a
\nmoment to reflect on the past year where
\nwe celebrated 100 years of success as
\nthe voice of business in our region. It
\nwas a year of looking back at our history
\nand planning for the anticipation of a
\nbright future.<\/p>\n

I have the privilege to talk with business
\nand chamber leaders from around
\nthe region and even the entire country
\nabout the current state of business,
\nchallenges being faced and what they
\nenvision for their business or economic
\ncommunity in the future. Through
\nthose conversations and discussions,
\na common message is currently being
\nexpressed – that this past year was a
\nyear of growth for most businesses and
\nthat consumer and business confidence
\nis at the highest level in many years.
\nLast year at this time, many of us felt
\ngreat optimism that our local economy
\nwould experience incremental growth
\nor at a minimum, remained stable. This
\nwas clearly an accurate forecast in that
\ndata such as unemployment and job
\ngrowth affirms that there were new jobs
\navailable and that our unemployment
\nrate, although higher than we would
\nlike, is one of the lowest rates in New
\nYork state and continuing to improve.<\/p>\n

New businesses continued to open
\nthroughout the past year creating many
\nof those new jobs. In addition, our tourism
\nsector businesses experienced an
\nabove average year and fared better
\nthan most other areas of the state.<\/p>\n

However, with all of the positive activity,
\ncontinuing challenges still held many
\ncompanies to mediocre increases in
\nbusiness.<\/p>\n

However, I think I can safely say that
\nas we enter 2015, our region is positioned
\nfor continued growth. The latest
\nstatistics for our Warren, Washington
\nand Northern Saratoga County MSA
\nbear out the realities of this stronger
\neconomic growth over this past year and
\nall indications are that we will continue
\nto move in a positive direction.<\/p>\n

Our region continues to be touted in
\nnational publications and websites as
\none of the best places to live, purchase
\nreal estate or find employment. Another
\nleading indicator is in regional real estate
\nsales data. Although not where we’d
\nall like it to be, the housing market continues to show consistent increases both
\nin number of sales and average prices.<\/p>\n

With all of this positive outlook, it is
\nthe longstanding belief of our Chamber
\nof Commerce that the key to ensuring
\nour regional economy remains growing
\nis a renewed focus on supporting our
\nlocal businesses.<\/p>\n

It will require all of us to come
\ntogether as a community to support
\nthese businesses that are, and always
\nhave been, the backbone of our local
\neconomy. The small businesses I speak
\nof are generally those we most often
\napproach first for donations to help a
\nlocal charity and who are also the most
\ngenerous.<\/p>\n

Because the weather in the first part
\nof the year is an impediment to many
\nof these businesses, it is incumbent on
\nus to not only help them survive, but
\nto make it our mission to help them
\nthrive by doing business with them.<\/p>\n

This is paramount to our region’s future
\neconomic potential and to ensuring our
\narea remains a terrific place to live, to
\nwork, to visit; to make a memorable life.<\/p>\n

As the Chamber begins its next 100
\nyears of serving this great community,
\nwe are encouraged by what we’re hearing
\nand seeing. The greater region has
\na new and genuine energy surrounding
\nit unlike decades past. Tapping that energy
\nto support our existing businesses
