The motivation for Shireen Gazzillo to
\nmove her business, Motivations Fitness Center,
\nto the corner of Glen Street and Sanford
\nStreet in Glens Falls, was simple: location,
\nlocation, location.
\n“This location offers more parking and
\nmore visibility,” Gazzillo said.<\/p>\n

The eight-year-old business originated in
\nQueensbury under the ownership and management
\nof Diniah Cornell.
\n“She had the business for four years,”
\nsaid Gazzillo. “She just felt she needed to
\nmove on.”<\/p>\n

Gazzillo was dedicated to the fitness business
\nand had been on the lookout to widen
\nher horizons.
\n“I wanted to be more than a trainer. I love
\nit. I breathe it,” Gazzillo said. “And I wanted
\nto do more.”
\n“My education is in business,” she said.
\n“And I always loved working out.”
\nWhen she bought the business, she changed
\nit from simply “Motivations” to “Motivations
\nFitness Center.” The focus of the business is
\nfitness classes and weight-training.<\/p>\n

“We get people from Facebook and our
\nwebsite, but we now get people just walking
\nin off the street,” said Gazzillo. “Every week
\nwe get 8-10 new calls. We are also finding,
\ntoo, that people seem to be a little bit leery
\nbecause you feel like you are in a fishbowl
\nnear the street like this, but once you get in
\nhere, you really don’t mind. It feels good.”<\/p>\n

The atmosphere of the place corroborates
\nher claim as clients pile into the bright space
\nfor classes such as zumba, cardio power
\nsculpt, step classes.<\/p>\n

Gazzillo and her staff of accredited fitness
\nprofessionals–Kim Bailey, Vicki Washburn,
\nAnn Gereaux and Karen Dingman–also offer
\npersonal training and spin classes. She also
\nhas a professional body builder, Tara Silza
\nwho sublets. She brings in her own clientele but also acts as one of the six personal trainers
\non staff.<\/p>\n

Silza is from Queensbury and has been with
\nMotivations Fitness Studio since Thanksgiving.
\nShe participates in international competitions
\nin the United States, Europe and
\nCanada. She has her own client base and
\nworks with aerobic and nutritional fitness as
\nwell as weight lifting.<\/p>\n

“We all know how to safely identify and
\nmeet personal goals,” Gazzillo said.
\nThough her first in impression of the building
\nwas unfavorable, she is now grateful for
\nthe run-down old building that was originally
\nShangrah’s Pharmacy.<\/p>\n

“When I first came in, I said this will
\nnever work,” Gazzillo said. But she made the
\ndecision to go ahead and the purchase was
\ncompleted in June 2014 and they opened for
\nbusiness in July.
\n“It took less than two months to renovate,”
\nshe said. “We were only closed for 10 days.”<\/p>\n

Gazzillo credited Pete Sluck, of Precision
\nConstruction, for the success of the transformation.
\n“Pete did a great job, he got this
\nplace up and running quick,” she said. “We
\nwere only closed for 10 days.
\n“Our clients are pretty committed,” she
\nadded, “but I didn’t want them to feel like
\nthey needed to find a place to workout for
\nsix weeks.”<\/p>\n

The renovation of the old blue building
\nincluded putting in large storefront windows,
\ncreating a combination space for group fitness
\nclasses and weight training, a refurbished
\nbasement for a cycle classroom with 10 bikes,
\ntwo renovated apartments upstairs and an
\nadditional wing that includes office space–
\ncurrently rented by Pauline O’Connell, Reiki
\nand Spiritual Consultant, and Jamie Newell,
\nMassage Therapist–and a pool.<\/p>\n

“The pool was previously used for physical
\ntherapy,” said Gazzillo. “I will be using it for aqua aerobics, offering a no impact workout.
\nIt is a great workout without compressing
\nthe joints.”<\/p>\n

One way that Gazzillo helps clients find
\nways to healthy balance and fitness is with an
\nelectrical impedance test. “This is a $3,000
\nmachine,” she said, hefting the hand-held device
\nthat is not much larger than a mini ipad.<\/p>\n

“You put one electrode on one arm and one
\non the opposite foot,” she said. The reading
\nis done while the person is laying down and
\nthe conclusions are based on age and height.
\nThe test gives a total body composition reading,
\nincluding body fat, lean muscle mass and
\nhydration levels.<\/p>\n

“We help clients decide what their caloric
\ndeficit needs to be, plus what exercises will bring them to their desired fitness level. Each
\npound of fat represents 3,500 calories and a
\nspinning class burns 1,000 calories. A person
\ncan safely lose two pounds a week, so they can
\ncreate a 7,000 calorie deficit safely,” she said.
\n“You can also add muscle mass, that’s about
\nchanging body composition.”<\/p>\n

“If you shoot for fitness and the quality
\nof life, the aesthetics come along with it,”
\nGazzillo said.<\/p>\n

First classes are always free as they hand
\nout free class passes to try it out. There are
\nno contracts or start up fees.<\/p>\n
