The Center for Economic Growth (CEG) in
\ncollaboration with the Greater Capital Region
\nWorkforce Investment Boards (GCR WIBs), in
\npartnership with Tech Valley Connections for
\nEducation and Jobs, a joint initiative of CEG
\nand GlobalFoundries, introduced the first in a
\nseries of videos highlighting local companies
\nthat offer exciting Science, Technology, Engineering
\nand Mathematics (STEM) careers
\nfor qualified local employees.<\/p>\n
The first video in the series features
\nAdirondack Studios, a manufacturer located
\nin Argyle. It can be viewed at http:\/\/www.techvalleyed.org, the website of the Tech Valley
\nConnection for Education & Jobs, at which
\nstudents, educators, parents, and businesses
\ncan learn more about the region’s trending
\ncareer and education pathways.
\nThe Greater Capital Region Workforce
\nInvestment Boards is comprised of four local
\nworkforce investment boards: the Capital Region,
\nColumbia-Greene, Fulton-Montgomery-
\nSchoharie, and Saratoga-Warren-Washington.<\/p>\n
The Tech Valley Connection for Education
\nand Jobs is a 13-county regional laboratory
\nfor trailing the most innovative practices in
\neducation and workforce development.<\/p>\n
Led by GlobalFoundries and the Center
\nfor Economic Growth, the initiative is a pioneering
\nmodel for transforming our k-12 and
\nhigher education systems to prepare students
\nand future employees for success, improve
\neducation outcomes for disadvantaged groups
\nand ensure a competitive U.S. workforce in
\nthe 21st century technology- and knowledge
\n-based economy.<\/p>\n
In 2012 the Greater Capital Region Workforce
\nInvestment Boards received a threeyear
\ngrant from U.S. Department of Labor’s
\nWorkforce Innovation Fund to address the
\nSTEM middle skills gap in the Greater Capital
\nRegion by supporting development of a talent
\npipeline that ensures that adults, dislocated
\nworkers, and disadvantaged youth have information
\nand training for STEM careers and
\naccess to quality jobs and that employers have
\naccess to a skilled workforce needed for their
\ncompanies’ success and economic growth.<\/p>\n
“Addressing the STEM skill shortage in the
\nGreater Capital Region of New York State will
\nensure that employers have access to qualified
\nworkers by establishing a new pipeline of STEM talent that links the workforce system,
\nemployers, educators, and emerging and returning
\nworkers,” said Gail Breen, executive
\ndirector Fulton, Montgomery and Schoharie
\nCounties Workforce Development Board,
\nInc. “Implicit in this goal is the realization
\nthat success for all is built on a foundation
\nof career pathways and life-long learning. ”<\/p>\n
This 13-county joint initiative helps facilitate,
\ncoordinate, and communicate best
\npractices between K-12 and higher education
\ninstitutions in this region and create pathways
\nfor employees in local STEM careers.<\/p>\n
The video series features local companies
\nthat highlight potential employers in the
\nregion and allow students and educators
\nan inside view as what local STEM jobs and
\ncareers look like.<\/p>\n
Mike Russo, GlobalFoundries lead in the
\ninitiative, said “the focus of this project has
\nbeen to develop a cost effective way to efficiently
\nconnect students and job seekers
\nwith careers through a “virtual tour” experience.<\/p>\n
This approach can be scaled and made
\navailable to businesses anywhere and helps to
\nconnect classrooms and the general public to
\nbusinesses, creating a better understanding
\nof career opportunities.”<\/p>\n

\ninitiative to strengthen regional
\nand institutional ties as we work together to
\ngrow the region’s economy,” said F. Michael
\nTucker, president of CEG. “Tech Valley is
\nhome to world-class businesses and educational

\ncompetitive workforce with the skills and
\neducation needed for jobs in the global 21st

\nas the Capital Region’s designated Regional
\nTechnology Development Center (RTDC).
