\nis urging customers to take an active role in
\nprotecting their technology data.<\/p>\n
“Glens Falls National Bank’s first priority
\nis protecting our customers’ money and information,”
\nsaid Tom Murphy, President and
\nCEO. “We use a combination of safeguards,
\nand we encourage our customers to do the
\nsame.”<\/p>\n
National Data Privacy Day was Jan. 28,
\nthe bank noted.
\nTo help ensure the safety of personal
\ninformation, the bank offered the following
\ntips:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Create “c0mplic@t3d” passwords. Avoid
\nbirthdays, pet names and simple passwords
\nlike 12345. It is also important to change
\npasswords at least three times a year. Theft
\nby someone the victim knows is the most
\ncommon type of identity theft or fraud,
\nso don’t share your passwords with family
\nmembers and be mindful of who has access
\nto your personal information.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Keep tabs on your accounts. Check
\naccount activity often online or by phone,
\ninstead of waiting for the monthly statement
\nto arrive in the mail. You are the first line
\nof defense because you know right away if
\na transaction is fraudulent. If you notice
\nunusual or unauthorized activity, notify your
\nbank right away. When a customer reports
\nan unauthorized transaction in a timely
\nmanner, the bank will take measures to help
\nprotect the account.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Stay alert online. Be sure computers and
\nmobile devices are equipped with up-to-date
\nanti-virus and malware protection. Never
\ngive out your personal financial information
\nin response to an unsolicited email, no matter
\nhow official it may seem. A bank should
\nnever contact you by email asking for your
\npassword, PIN or account information.
\nAvoid opening links and attachments
\n– especially from senders you don’t know.<\/p>\n
When submitting financial information on a website, look for the padlock or key icon
\nat the top or bottom of your browser, and
\nmake sure the Internet address begins with
\n“https” – this signals your information is
\nsecure during transmission.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Mobilize your defenses. Use the passcode
\nlock on your smartphone and other
\ndevices. This will make it more difficult for
\nthieves to access your information if your device
\nis lost or stolen. Before you donate, sell
\nor trade your mobile device, be sure to wipe
\nit using specialized software or using the
\nmanufacturer’s recommended technique.<\/p>\n
Some software allows you to wipe your
\ndevice remotely if it is lost or stolen. Use
\ncaution when downloading apps, as they may
\ncontain malware.<\/p>\n
Murphy also offered tips for people who
\nhave been victimized. He said victims of
\nfraud and those who suspect personal information
\nhas been compromised should take
\nthe following steps:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Call your bank and credit card issuers
\nimmediately so they can take necessary
\nsteps to protect your account.<\/p>\n
\u2022 File a police report and call the fraud
\nunit of the three credit-reporting companies.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Consider placing a victim statement
\nin your credit report and a fraud alert on
\nyour account.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Keep a log of all the contacts you make
\nwith authorities regarding the matter. Write
\ndown names, titles, and phone numbers in
\ncase you need to contact them again or refer
\nto them in future correspondence.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Contact the FTC’s ID Theft Consumer
\nResponse Center at (877) ID THEFT or www.ftc.gov\/idtheft.<\/p>\n
Data Privacy Day commemorated the 1981
\nsigning of the first legally binding international
\ntreaty dealing with privacy and data
\nprotection. It is led by the National Cyber
\nSecurity Alliance, a nonprofit, public private
\npartnership focused on cyber security education
