SUNY Adirondack, as part of the State

University of New York’s Green Initiative, is

off the electrical grid, at least when it comes

to providing solar lighting for a portion of its

south parking lot, college officials said.

The college’s facilities staff, under the

design and direction of Assistant Director of

Facilities Frank Jelley, built and installed a

solar lighting project to illuminate a section

of the south parking lot near the soccer field

at its Queensbury campus.

The lights were acquired by Facilities Director

Anthony Palangi.

Seven lights were installed, and the lighting

pattern covers approximately 21,000 square

feet. The project is completely off the grid

and no underground utilities were required,

according to officials.

The project cost approximately $53,500,

which went mostly for materials. But Jelley

said the college saved almost $45,000 by

procuring the solar lights through New York

state contract and designing and installing the

project in-house.

Plans call for more such lights to be installed

as funds become available.
