“Maybe I have a charmed life,” mused
\nSuzanne Hoffman, co-owner with her husband
\nof Glen Street Associates, a real estate
\ndevelopment and management firm, but she
\nhas found no particular challenges deriving
\nfrom the fact that she is a woman in a largely
\nmale business.<\/p>\n

“If the challenges are there, maybe I don’t
\nacknowledge them. I just blow through it. If
\nyou don’t make it a problem, it isn’t one.” she
\nsaid. Of course, before she and her husband
\nformed Glen Street Associates, she was a
\nNew York State Trooper for eight years–and
\nraised four children, the youngest of whom
\nis now a junior in college.<\/p>\n

Like many women at her stage in life,
\nHoffman revels in having the freedom to devote
\nmore of her energies to her career now
\nthat her children are grown. “Other women
\nout there are balancing a lot of balls,” she
\nreflected.
\nGlens Falls is also at a good stage of its
\nlife, she noted. “It’s good to see people living
\nin downtown Glens Falls. It brings a new
\nvibrancy to the community.” Along with more people living downtown, have come restaurants
\nand other businesses to cater to them.<\/p>\n

Glen Street Associates is a major player in that renaissance, rehabbing old buildings
\nfor new living and commercial spaces. Their
\nfirst project was the Water Tower Village
\napartments in South Glens Falls, which they
\nbrought onto the market in 2001. Today, they
\nown and\/or manage 11 buildings in Glens
\nFalls, South Glens Falls and Hudson Falls.
\nMost combine apartments with retail and
\noffice space.<\/p>\n

The old post office building on Warren
\nStreet in Glens Falls is a major current project.
\nThe building was built in 1915 and was
\nvacant for several years before Glen Street
\nAssociates took it in hand to rehabilitate for
\ncommercial and office space.<\/p>\n

Hoffman, who is vice president of the
\ncompany, and her husband divide the work.
\nShe looks after the day to day operations and
\n“Peter enjoys development,” she said. They
\nalso rely upon a good office staff to assist.
\nWorking with a spouse can have its problems,
\nshe admitted, “but, when it works, it’s
\nthe most wonderful thing in the world.”<\/p>\n

Before forming their company, in 2004, the
\nHoffmans had a restaurant and a car wash,
\nboth in Clifton Park. Her husband sold the
\nrestaurant in 2001 and the car wash, soon
\nafter that. They still live in Clifton Park,
\nbut the focus of their work has been further
\nnorth.<\/p>\n
