{"id":16441,"date":"2015-03-13T16:08:54","date_gmt":"2015-03-13T20:08:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.glensfalls.com\/glensfallsbusinessjournal\/2015\/03\/hudson-valley-wireless-in-albany-works-to-bring-internet-access-to-local-counties.html"},"modified":"2015-03-13T16:08:54","modified_gmt":"2015-03-13T20:08:54","slug":"hudson-valley-wireless-in-albany-works-to-bring-internet-access-to-local-counties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.glensfalls.com\/glensfallsbusinessjournal\/2015\/03\/hudson-valley-wireless-in-albany-works-to-bring-internet-access-to-local-counties\/","title":{"rendered":"Hudson Valley Wireless In Albany Works To Bring Internet Access To Local Counties"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"img-left\">\n<div>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"hudson valley wireless hc.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.glensfalls.com\/glensfallsbusinessjournal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/109\/2015\/03\/hudson20valley20wireless20hc.jpg\" class=\"aligncenter\" height=\"224\" width=\"300\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"img-caption\">This Hudson Valley Wireless tower in the town of Easton, Washington County, serves as a microwave distribution point connecting various regions with broadband Internet access\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>BY LIZ WITBECK<\/p>\n<p>In a time when most people are connected<br \/>\nthrough the Internet, it may seem<br \/>\nsurprising that nearby communities do not<br \/>\nhave access to the World Wide Web.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is many rural towns in Upstate<br \/>\nNew York do not have a cost-effective<br \/>\nsolution for providing Internet access for<br \/>\nhomes or businesses.<br \/>\nHudson Valley Wireless is working to<br \/>\nalleviate that in the Glens Falls region,<br \/>\nwith the help of grant funds from New<br \/>\nYork state.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a lot of socioeconomic benefits<br \/>\nto bringing Internet into these communities,&#8221;<br \/>\nsaid Jason Guzzo, general manager.<br \/>\n&#8220;A lot of people have run their businesses<br \/>\nout of their homes and need Internet.&#8221;<br \/>\nThe company has been providing residences<br \/>\nand businesses in rural communities<br \/>\nwith broadband Internet access since<br \/>\n2002. Its original goal was to provide<br \/>\nwireless broadband internet Services<br \/>\nthroughout the Capital District as an alternative<br \/>\nto dial-up and T1 services. Shortly<br \/>\nafter deploying in the cities, the company<br \/>\nstarted expanding the services to rural<br \/>\ncommunities that lack access to affordable<br \/>\nDSL and cable-based technology.<\/p>\n<p>The company has towers in Albany,<br \/>\nRensselaer, Washington and Warren counties<br \/>\nand covers an area of 1,400 square<br \/>\nmiles.<\/p>\n<p>The company works closely with the<br \/>\nstate of New York. Together they determine<br \/>\nwhere there is insufficient coverage within<br \/>\nthe state and make comprehensive plans<br \/>\nto bring Internet access to rural towns.<br \/>\nHudson Valley Wireless was the recipient<br \/>\nof a $2.7 million state grant through<br \/>\nthe ConnectNY Project to assist in bringing<br \/>\nwireless Internet into local communities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The projects receiving these grants<br \/>\nrepresent the very best proposals with<br \/>\nthe most potential to benefit statewide<br \/>\neconomic and community development<br \/>\nefforts,&#8221; said Gov. Andrew Cuomo when the<br \/>\ngrants were announced. &#8220;These funds will strengthen New Yorks broadband capacity<br \/>\nand encourage sustainable adoption of<br \/>\nbroadband service in unserved and underserved<br \/>\ncommunities, counties and regions<br \/>\nacross the state.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the company, the grant<br \/>\nwill help deliver broadband Internet to<br \/>\nmore than 40,000 households and 2,000<br \/>\nbusinesses that do not have access to high<br \/>\n-speed Internet in Albany, Washington,<br \/>\nRensselaer, Warren and Saratoga counties.<\/p>\n<p>Hudson Valley Wireless was the fifth<br \/>\nlargest recipient of the grant program.<br \/>\nGuzzo said new education requirements<br \/>\nwith Common Core state standards require<br \/>\nthe requisite testing in school districts<br \/>\nto be done by computer. Unfortunately,<br \/>\nmany small towns do not have high-speed<br \/>\nInternet access. This puts rural school<br \/>\ndistricts at a distinct disadvantage. By<br \/>\nbringing Internet into these communities,<br \/>\nHudson Valley Wireless hopes to boost the<br \/>\neconomy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want to be a community-based organization,&#8221;<br \/>\nsaid Guzzo.<\/p>\n<p>The main technology, NITRO Broadband,<br \/>\nutilizes fixed wireless technology. The<br \/>\ncompany will leverage existing towers and<br \/>\nfiber optic facilities in the region to bring<br \/>\naffordable high-speed Internet to rural<br \/>\ncommunities.<\/p>\n<p>NITRO Broadband is available for residential<br \/>\nand business customers starting at<br \/>\n6 Mbps (megabits per second) download<br \/>\n\/1.5 Mbps upload. The network is designed<br \/>\nto deliver high bandwidth and low latency<br \/>\nallowing users to download movies, online<br \/>\ngaming, surf the Internet and more.<\/p>\n<p>The parent company, Hudson Valley<br \/>\nCommunications, provides wireless Internet,<br \/>\nbusiness telephone systems, and<br \/>\ncomputer networks for businesses.
