North Country Veterinary Referral in
\nQueensbury is a new medical specialist
\ngroup for animals. In the first three months
\nthe practice has been operating, they have
\nreceived referrals for internal medicine,
\nsurgery, cardiology, oncology, orthopedics
\nand dermatology.<\/p>\n

“If there is an ology, we have a specialist
\nfor it,” said Dr. Matt Brunke, director of the
\nnew clinic. They also provide hospice care
\nand physical therapy.<\/p>\n

Previously, people in the Queensbury area
\nhad to take their animals to Tufts Veterinary
\nSchool in Boston, to the Cornell University
\nVeterinary College in Ithaca, or to Montreal
\nfor specialized care. Now, they have a facility
\nclose to home, Brunke said.

\nown the new facility. They continue to operate
\ntheir own veterinary practice, Countryside
\nVeterinary Hospital, just up the road.<\/p>\n

“I’m not going anywhere,” Keller said.
\n“People keep telling me that they are going
\nto miss me, but while I will be CEO of the
\nnew clinic, I will keep doing what I am doing
\nat Countryside.”<\/p>\n

Brunke is responsible for the day-to-day
\noperation of the referral clinic. There is a
\nstaff of eight veterinary specialists, some full
\ntime and others, working there part time.
\nGenerally, they work as a team. “Folks are
\nlooking for options,” Brunke said, “and we do
\nsome things regular vets don’t do.”<\/p>\n

The new clinic does not provide primary
\ncare.
\nThe owners “had the foresight to see
\nthat the area needed a specialty veterinary
\npractice,” Brunke said, and they asked him
\nto oversee that practice. Before coming to
\nQueensbury, he had a similar practice in
\nAlbany for 15 or 20 years.<\/p>\n

Patients are referred to the facility by
\nother veterinarians. On some days, Brunke
\nsaid, they see 10 or 12 patients; on other days,
\neven more. The clinic is open six days a week.
\nThe most common issues, so far, have been cancer, torn ACLs and “a lot of eye issues,”
\nincluding cataracts and injuries, he reported.<\/p>\n

Referrals have come from Plattsburgh,
\nLake Placid, up and down the Northway as
\nfar south as Catskill and into Vermont, as well
\nas from the Queensbury area, Brunke said.<\/p>\n

Like all medical care these days, the
\nservices of a veterinary specialist can be
\ncostly. Nationally, only about 2 percent of
\npeople carry medical insurance for their
\npets, Brunke said. “We try to be practical
\nabout fees,” he said, offering “care credit,”
\ndeferred interest, and special credit cards
\nfor pet care.<\/p>\n

\nbuilding at 454 Queensbury Ave. The telephone
