A new bachelor’s degree program tailored for
\npracticing registered nurses is now in place at
\nSUNY Plattsburgh’s branch campus at SUNY
\nAdirondack in Queensbury and is accepting
\napplications.<\/p>\n
Officials said the on-campus R.N.-to-B.S.
\nin nursing program worked out with SUNY
\nPlattsburgh opens new career paths for
\nhealth professionals in Warren, Washington
\nand Saratoga counties. The convenient option
\npairs classroom teaching and affordable SUNY
\ntuition with a top-rated institution known for
\na premier nursing program. An online R.N.-to-
\nB.S. option will remain in place.<\/p>\n
SUNY Adirondack offers a two-year associate
\ndegree in nursing. Strengthening the connection
\nto include a bachelor’s degree program
\nprovides a seamless transition from the nursing
\nA.A.S. degree, college officials said.
\n“Our longstanding partnership with SUNY
\nPlattsburgh coupled with our outstanding nursing
\nprogram is strengthened with the addition
\nof another seamless pathway for completion of
\nthe emerging industry standard of a baccalaureate
\ndegree in nursing,” said SUNY Adirondack
\nPresident Kristine Duffy. “Being able to offer
\nthis continuum of education at our Queensbury
\ncampus is crucial to connect our students and
\ncommunity members with regional workforce
\ndemands in the growing field of health care.”<\/p>\n
“We are pleased to add an on-campus
\nR.N.-to-B.S. nursing completion program to
\nour SUNY Plattsburgh at Queensbury Branch
\nCampus offerings,” said Stephen Danna, Ed.D.,
\ndean of the branch campus. “Requirements
\nfor nursing have increased as more hospitals
\nand health care centers expect nurses to hold
\nbachelor’s degrees. We’re pleased to offer this
\naffordable opportunity for practicing registered
\nnurses.”<\/p>\n
The on-campus R.N.-to-B.S. initiative originated
\nwith the faculty of the SUNY Plattsburgh
\nDepartment of Nursing and Nutrition. It passed
\nseveral administrative steps and was recently
\napproved by Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the state Department of Education.<\/p>\n
“Our programs provide students with outstanding
\nresources and experiences found in
\nfew colleges this size,” said Noreen Houck, M.S.,
\nR.N., associate professor and chairperson of
\nthe SUNY Plattsburgh Department of Nursing
\nand Nutrition. “Students work with dedicated
\nfaculty and industry leaders to provide health
\ncare to their communities.”<\/p>\n
The two colleges have had an extensive and
\ncooperative relationship for many years, since
\nSUNY Plattsburgh began offering master’s
\ndegree programs in education at the community
\ncollege, SUNY Plattsburgh President
\nJohn Ettling said.<\/p>\n
“The close affiliation between our two
\ncampuses has benefited residents in Warren,
\nWashington and Saratoga counties,” Ettling
\nsaid. “Since 1986, students have successfully
\ncompleted course work toward baccalaureate
\nand master’s degrees through classes at the
\nQueensbury campus and online. I am pleased
\nthat registered nurses will now be able to
\npursue bachelor’s degrees through this new
\narrangement.”<\/p>\n
Initially, 26 nursing credits will be held on
\nsite, including health assessment, health promotion,
\nresearch, informatics, theory, public
\nhealth and leadership and management. The
\nprogram can be completed in four semesters,
\nor two years, officials said.<\/p>\n
A total of 415 students were enrolled in
\nSUNY Plattsburgh nursing programs in fall
\n2014. Graduates have achieved a 100 percent
\npass-rate on national licensing exams within
\none year of graduation. All graduates in 2014
\nwere employed within one year of graduation,
\nwith half securing a first job before graduation.<\/p>\n
