It’s almost the Fourth of July — time for
\nfireworks, picnics and a reflection on all the
\nliberties we possess in this country. But if
\nyou’re going to enjoy the freedom to do the
\nthings you want, especially during your retirement
\nyears, you’ll want to take the steps
\nnecessary to achieve your own “Financial
\nIndependence Day.”<\/p>\n

Here are a few suggestions for helping you
\nreach that goal:<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Liberate yourself from debt. For most of
\nus, a certain amount of debt is unavoidable.
\nBut the greater control you can gain over your
\ndebts, the better off you will be, because any
\ndollars not spent in paying debts can be used
\nto save and invest for your future. So look for
\nways to cut down on your spending and think
\nabout postponing some purchases until you
\ncan pay for them in cash. It may not be easy,
\nbut it’s possible. And by putting this “found
\nmoney” to work immediately in quality investments,
\nyou may motivate yourself to keep a
\nlid on your debt level.
\n\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Unlock the power of time. Albert Einstein
\nonce said, “The most powerful force in the
\nuniverse is compound interest.” Einstein,
\nwho knew a thing or two about the nature
\nof time, clearly recognized its importance in
\ninvesting. In fact, as an investor, time may be
\nyour greatest ally.<\/p>\n

The more years in which you invest, the
\nmore dollars you’ll put in, and the longer
\nyou’ll have for your investments to potentially
\ngrow. Even if you’re just starting out in your
\ncareer and can only invest a small amount
\neach month, you’ll be starting to accumulate
\nthe amount you’ll eventually need to enjoy the
\nretirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Release your investments’ growth potential.
\nTo attain financial freedom during your
\nretirement years, you will need to invest for growth — it’s that simple. So include an appropriate
\namount of growth-oriented vehicles
\nin your overall investment mix. Ultimately,
\nthis mix should be based on your risk tolerance,
\ntime horizon and specific long-term
\ngoals.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Free your investments from “clustering.”
\nIn the investment world, as in many
\nother arenas of life, you can have “too much
\nof a good thing.” For example, if you own a
\nparticular investment, such as a stock, that
\nhas done well, you might think that it’s a
\ngood idea to own more of the same type of
\nstock. But when investing, duplication can
\nbe dangerous, because if a market downturn
\naffects one asset class particularly hard, and
\nmuch of your portfolio is tied up in that asset
\nclass, you could take a big hit. Instead of
\n“clustering” your dollars around a single asset
\nor two, you could diversify your holdings by
\nowning a mix of stocks, bonds, government securities and other vehicles.
\nWhile diversification can potentially help
\nyou reduce the impact of volatility on your
\nholdings, a diversified portfolio can’t guarantee
\na profit or protect you from loss.<\/p>\n

Achieving any type of freedom, in any kind
\nof endeavor, takes time and effort. That’s
\ncertainly the case with financial freedom- you will need to consistently make the right
\nmoves, over a period of many years, before you
\ncan finally declare your fiscal independence.
\nBut once you reach that point, you will likely
\nconclude that your diligence and dedication
\nwere well worth it.<\/p>\n
