After more than 40 years of caring for
\narea seniors, Fort Hudson Health System,
\na nonprofit senior care organization, has
\nplans for a $6 million renovation and modernization
\nof its centerpiece Fort Hudson
\nNursing Center on Route 4 in Fort Edward.<\/p>\n

Fort Hudson Nursing Center is the region’s
\nonly privately operated nonprofit
\nnursing center and the largest skilled
\nnursing facility in Warren, Washington and
\nnorthern Saratoga counties, at 196 beds.<\/p>\n

In 1996, the facility became the first in the
\narea to offer a specialized care environment
\nfor people living with Alzheimer’s disease,
\nthe Sandy Hill Pavilion, supported by the
\nSandy Hill Foundation, officials said.
\nIn addition to the 24-hour skilled nursing
\ncenter, Fort Hudson offers short-term
\nrehabilitation, home health care, medical
\nand social adult daycare programs, care
\ncoordination and retirement senior housing.<\/p>\n

The center announced it is already more
\nthan halfway toward the goal of raising
\n$1.5 million in community donations for
\nthe project.<\/p>\n

Chief Executive Officer Andrew Cruikshank
\nsaid more than $800,000 in community
\ndonations was committed during the
\n“quiet phase” of a fundraising effort.<\/p>\n

Leading the way with contributions are
\nthe Charles R. Wood Foundation with a gift
\nof $250,000, and the Sandy Hill Foundation
\nand the David S. & Janet R. Sheridan
\nFoundation with gifts of $200,000 each.
\nOther major donors include Glens Falls
\nNational Bank, Stewart’s Shops, The Glens
\nFalls Foundation and Cool Insuring Agency.<\/p>\n

Fort Hudson is now launching a regionwide
\ncapital campaign, entitled “Getting
\nBetter With Age,” in hopes of raising an
\nadditional $700,000 for the project.
\n“This project is all about providing
\nthe best quality of life for Fort Hudson’s
\nresidents, the best visiting experience for
\nfamilies and friends, and the best care environment
\nfor our caregivers,” Cruikshank
\nsaid. “As with any 40-year-old home, the
\ntime has come to upgrade and enhance
\nour amenities, infrastructure and technology
\nto provide new levels of comfort and
\nenjoyment.<\/p>\n

“We are extremely honored and grateful
\nthat three of our region’s most respected
\nand generous benefactors have stepped
\nforward to help us in such a significant
\nway. The Charles R. Wood Foundation, the Sandy Hill Foundation and the Sheridan
\nFoundation are among the greatest friends
\nour seniors could ask for.”<\/p>\n

Among the many elements of the modernization,
\nFort Hudson plans to:<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Transform four dining rooms to provide
\na more comfortable, home-like setting, and
\nimproved opportunities for activities and
\nsocialization.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Create a new, more inviting lobby and
\ngathering place for residents, families and
\nfriends.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Construct a new main entrance with a
\ncovered portico to shelter arriving residents
\nand guests from the elements.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Replace furnishings in many areas
\nthroughout the facility, and make a wide
\nvariety of infrastructure improvements,
\nincluding new air handling units and new
\nelevators.<\/p>\n

“The skilled medical care and personal
\nattention given to the residents of Fort
\nHudson are second to none, and this project
\nwill bring the quality of our facilities and
\ntechnology to the next level, as well,” said
\nGretchen Steffan, president of the board
\nof directors of Fort Hudson Health System.
\n“We are pleased to partner with our regional
\ncommunity to continue Fort Hudson’s
\nproud tradition of care.”<\/p>\n

Established in 1969, Fort Hudson Health
\nSystem is the region’s leading provider of
\nsenior care services inside and outside the
\nhome.<\/p>\n

“Fort Hudson is one of our region’s greatest
\nassets,” said Dr. John Bulova, a retired
\nsurgeon who is co-chairing the capital
\ncampaign committee with his wife, Judith,
\na retired TD Bank executive and a member
\nof the Fort Hudson board of directors.<\/p>\n

“There’s a great peace of mind that comes
\nfrom knowing this organization is here for
\nyou when a loved one is in need of care. Our
\ncommittee is hopeful that people will stop
\nto think about this in the coming days and
\nthat they’ll join us in making a gift to this
\ncommunity treasure.”<\/p>\n
