Price Chopper is building a new store in Fort
\nEdward, on the site of the former Grand Union
\nat 354 Broadway.
\nBut first the property has to be cleaned up
\nunder the Brownfield program, and that will
\nbegin this year.<\/p>\n

The project will be a Market 32, part of a
\nrebranding and expansion plan for Schenectady based
\nGolub Corp, owner of the Price Chopper
\nchain of grocery stores.<\/p>\n

Cleanup of the property is under way. D.A.
\nCollins Construction Co., out of Wilton, was
\ncontracted to clean up the site.
\nConstruction of the 40,000-square-foot store
\nis expected to begin in the spring and is said to
\nbe the first Market 32 built from the ground up
\nin the state.
\nPrice Chopper officials did not respond to
\nrequests for information.<\/p>\n

The site, a brownfield, is being developed
\nby 354 Broadway LLC, which has been working
\nwith the town and will be involved in upcoming
\ncleanup at the site.<\/p>\n

The town of Fort Edward just received a
\n$300,000 cleanup grant through the Brownfield
\nOpportunity Area program.
\n“It’s been a very long process, but we are finally
\nready to get started,” stated Mitch Suprenant,
\nFort Edward town supervisor.<\/p>\n

The property was contaminated with PCB
\nmaterial when it was used as a dumping ground
\nfor General Electric Co., he said.
\nThe town currently owns the property. The
\nEPA cleanup grant had to to be secured before
\nany transference of ownership. DEC approval
\nwas also needed.<\/p>\n

Now that appropriate approval and grants
\nhave been secured, the town is able to officially
\nsell it to area developers. Money has been placed
\nin an escrow account. Paperwork was signed
\nJuly 13.<\/p>\n

The developers will be responsible for the
\ncost of cleanup. Brownfield cleanup grants may
\nbe available to offer tax credits.
\n“Nothing could be done until we had the
\ncleanup grant. Now we have that, and we’re ready
\nto sign contracts. We’re very excited to get things
\nmoving,” said Suprenant.<\/p>\n

“It’s been a really great process dealing with all
\nthe agencies–federal and state, National Grid,
\nthe EPA. There has been a good team effort from
\neveryone,” said Suprenant.<\/p>\n

Fort Edward does not currently have a grocery
\nstore in town.
\nPCB material will be relocated to a hazardous
\nwaste disposal facility, or treated and returned
\nto the site to be used as fill.
\nWashington County had seized the property
\nfor unpaid taxes years ago. The town of Fort
\nEdward later bought the property for $1. The
\nsite has remained unusable because of the soil
\ncontamination.<\/p>\n

Building is expected to begin in the spring of
\n2016, with a grand opening for the store anticipated
