According to the International Labour Organization
\nand the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics,
\nAmerican employees work more hours per year
\nthan any other industrialized nation in the world.<\/p>\n

So if people are going to spend that much time
\nat work, it can be well-worth it for companies
\nto invest in work spaces to improve employees’
\nergonomics, morale, and efficiency.<\/p>\n

When designing a workspace, it is crucial that
\nyou take the time to analyze how you and your
\nemployees work, to understand the challenges
\nyou face with your space, and to learn about ways
\nthat other people are working.
\nIf you are interested in updating your office
\nspace, but you are not sure where to begin, here
\nare a few of the top new trends.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Standing to work: With study after study
\ncoming out about the health issues associated
\nwith prolonged sitting, the sit-to-stand desk has
\nbecome a hot trend in office design. Offering the
\nflexibility to perform work in either position,
\nsit-to-stand desks improve ergonomics, and the
\nvariety of vantage points also sparks creativity.
\nSit-to-stand desks are highly appealing to
\nmany people in artistic roles-designers and writers,
\nfor example-as well as younger employees
\nwho like the “cool factor.”<\/p>\n

While they aren’t for everyone, it’s a great option
\nto offer employees.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Lower workstation walls: The “cubicle
\nfarm” may just face extinction as divider walls
\nare getting lower and lower. Because 65 percent
\nof the cost of a cubicle is in the vertical panels, benching-a desk system devoid of walls- is
\nbecoming increasingly popular. Benching saves
\nmoney, increases collaboration, and allows you to
\nfit more employees into a smaller space.<\/p>\n

There are trade-offs with lower or non-existent
\nworkstation walls, however. Noise and lack of privacy
\nare seen as problematic to some employees,
\nwhile more distractible people may struggle with
\nconcentration and productivity.<\/p>\n

Although there are numerous advantages to
\nbringing down the walls in your office space, the
\ndecision should be carefully weighed.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Breakout spaces: Meetings aren’t just being
\nheld in conference rooms anymore. Employees
\noften feel that traditional business meetings are
\ntoo formal, too long, and generally a waste of
\ntime. Instead, teammates are coming together
\nfor shorter, impromptu t\u00c3\u00aate-\u00c3 -t\u00c3\u00aates that last a
\nmaximum of 20-30 minutes.<\/p>\n

Employees are meeting in breakout areas for
\nthese quick sessions, then returning to their
\nindividual workspaces to complete their tasks.
\nThis kind of meeting style means that workstations
\nare getting smaller, but shared meeting
\nspaces are getting larger, both in number and
\narea. Many companies are designing their offices
\nto include several of these brainstorming spaces
\nclose to employees’ desks where small groups can
\ncome together, knee-to-knee, instead of around a
\nlarge conference table.<\/p>\n

Businesses are realizing that in order to stay
\nahead and become forerunners in their industries,
\nthey need to encourage this sort of collaboration
\namong their employees. If you want to
\nmake just one change to your current office space,
\nthis one can be relatively inexpensive to implement,
\nyet high-impact for employee efficiency.”<\/p>\n
