The Charles R. Wood Foundation has
\nissued a matching grant challenge to the
\nregional community as part of its latest
\nmajor gift to Glens Falls Hospital.<\/p>\n
The Wood Foundation made a $125,000
\ngift to the hospital to assist with the relocation
\nand expansion of the oncology pharmacy
\nat the C. R. Wood Cancer Center and
\nhas committed a second $125,000 matching
\ngrant if area families and businesses combine
\nto give an equal amount to the project.<\/p>\n
“Every dollar that you contribute to the
\noncology pharmacy project becomes two
\ndollars, thanks to the Wood Foundation,”
\nsaid Cindy Sherwood, vice president of
\ndevelopment for the Glens Falls Hospital
\nFoundation. “We’re hopeful that everyone
\nwho has been helped by the C. R. Wood
\nCancer Center — or who might someday be
\nhelped — will help us meet this challenge.”
\nThe late Charles R. “Charley” Wood,
\nfounder of Storytown USA (now The Great
\nEscape theme park) and many other area
\nhospitality businesses, established the
\nWood Foundation in 1978 for the purpose
\nof helping area nonprofit organizations.<\/p>\n
In 2001, he made a $1.4 million gift to the
\nhospital, which led to the renaming of the
\nCancer Center in his honor two years later.<\/p>\n
“Once again the Wood Foundation has
\nstepped to the fore with a gift that inspires
\nothers to give,” said Dr. John Schutze of
\nSchutze Family Dentistry, chairman of the
\nGlens Falls Hospital Foundation Board of
\nTrustees. “Just like Charley Wood himself, they make generous investments that multiply
\nmany times over for the good of our
\ncommunity.”<\/p>\n
The oncology pharmacy at The C. R.
\nWood Cancer Center is where pharmacists
\nprepare and dispense the chemotherapy
\ndrugs and other medications used by the
\ncenter’s patients. The newly expanded
\npharmacy will enable pharmacists to safely
\nincrease the amount of chemotherapy drugs
\nthey are able to prepare at any given time,
\nproviding improved service to patients at
\na time when patient volume at the Cancer
\nCenter is increasing. The expansion will
\nalso ensure that the pharmacy is able to
\ncomply with changing federal regulations
\nregarding the safe handling of medications
\nto protect both patients and staff, hospital
\nofficials said.<\/p>\n
“More than 1,000 new cases of cancer are
\ntreated at Glens Falls Hospital each year,
\nand the oncology pharmacy is an invaluable
\npart of the care those patients receive,” said
\nPresident and CEO Dianne Shugrue. “We
\nare thrilled that the Wood Foundation has
\nchosen to support this important project,
\nand we look forward to our community’s
\nhelp in meeting the challenge.”<\/p>\n
