Kafin will serve a two-year term as chairman of the Adirondack Council\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Adirondack Council board of directors<br \/>\nelected environmental attorney and local nonprofit<br \/>\norganization founder Robert J. Kafin to serve a<br \/>\ntwo-year term as its chairman.<\/p>\n<p>Kafin is a founding board member of Friends of<br \/>\nColes Woods, Glens Falls Action Committee and the<br \/>\nLower Adirondack Regional Arts Council (LARAC).<br \/>\nThe position is unpaid.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are thrilled to have Bob Kafin as our new<br \/>\nchairman,&#8221; said Adirondack Council Executive<br \/>\nDirector William C. Janeway. &#8220;Bob is a highly<br \/>\nrespected environmental attorney who began<br \/>\nhis career in the Adirondacks, but made a name<br \/>\nfor himself nationwide with his legal skills and<br \/>\nexpertise. He is one of the nation&#8217;s top environmental<br \/>\nlawyers and he also cares deeply about the future of<br \/>\nthe park&#8217;s communities and its residents.&#8221;<br \/>\nHe will take the reins of the organization from<br \/>\nAnn Carmel, who chaired the council&#8217;s board from<br \/>\n2011 to 2015.<br \/>\n&#8220;Bob will do a splendid job as chairman,&#8221;<br \/>\nsaid Ann Carmel. &#8220;He knows the park very well,<br \/>\nunderstands government and politics and works<br \/>\nwell with people. The board could not have made<br \/>\na better choice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kafin said Carmel accomplished a great deal in<br \/>\nher two terms.<br \/>\n&#8220;Ann has served with distinction these past four<br \/>\nyears,&#8221; Kafin said. &#8220;Ann oversaw the search for our<br \/>\nnew director Willie Janeway. She also completed<br \/>\na strategic plan that will guide our work for years<br \/>\nto come, and carried out a capital campaign that<br \/>\nessentially doubled our Forever Wild Fund from $3<br \/>\nmillion to more than $6 million, helping to secure<br \/>\nthe future of the organization. Her leadership,<br \/>\nenthusiasm and experience will be missed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A native of suburban Philadelphia, Kafin moved<br \/>\nto Glens Falls after graduating from Franklin &amp;<br \/>\nMarshall College in Lancaster, Pa., and earning<br \/>\nhis law degree from Harvard University. Kafin<br \/>\nwas admitted to practice law in New York in 1967.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Decades ago, Bob helped farmers in Schoharie<br \/>\nCounty protect their valley croplands from<br \/>\nbeing flooded by a new dam. Here, he oversaw<br \/>\nenvironmental studies on sports venues for the<br \/>\nOlympic Winter Games in 1980 and helped defeat<br \/>\na plan to build nearly 5,000 homes adjacent to<br \/>\nthe St. Regis Canoe Area,&#8221; Janeway said. &#8220;He has<br \/>\nhelped to build public ski trails in Glens Falls and<br \/>\nto enhance the local arts scene. Not many people<br \/>\naround here know he is also in charge of one of<br \/>\nthe largest urban farmers&#8217; markets in America as<br \/>\nchairman of GrowNYC.<\/p>\n<p>Since 1971, Kafin has developed expertise in<br \/>\nthe major federal and state environmental laws,<br \/>\nwas one of the primary authors of the initial set of<br \/>\nregulations implementing the NYS Environmental<br \/>\nQuality Review Act (SEQR), and among the first<br \/>\nlawyers to conduct hearings under the Adirondack<br \/>\nPark Agency Act.<\/p>\n<p>From 1991 to 2009, he was a member of the<br \/>\nsenior management team for Proskauer Rose in<br \/>\nNew York City, serving as its chief operating partner<br \/>\nfor 15 years and also as its general counsel. He is the<br \/>\nfounder and a member of the firm&#8217;s Environmental<br \/>\nGroup.<\/p>\n<p>Kafin is on the board of directors for the<br \/>\nPreservation League of New York State and Parks<br \/>\nand Trails New York.
