The Hyde Collection recently received its
\nlargest gift of modern art in 30 years in the form
\nof a group of paintings, drawings, prints, mixed
\nmedia, and sculpture by many of the world’s
\nleading modern artists.<\/p>\n

Museum officials said the collection of 55
\nworks of art, including works by Josef Albers, Sol
\nLeWitt, Grace Hartigan, Ellsworth Kelly, Robert
\nMotherwell, Bridget Riley, Robert Rauschenberg,
\nDavid Smith, and 38 other artists, was given to
\nThe Hyde by Werner Feibes and the late James
\nSchmitt, architects and longtime art patrons,
\ncollectors, and friends of The Hyde.<\/p>\n

Feibes and Schmitt, partners in work and
\nlife, began collecting modern art in the 1950s.
\nTheir collection evolved over a half century, as
\nthey explored galleries in the United States and
\nabroad, and developed personal relationships
\nwith artists and art dealers, Hyde officials said.
\n“This is a transformational gift for The Hyde,”
\nsaid Erin Coe, director of The Hyde Collection.
\n“The museum is largely known as a collection of
\nOld Masters. The donation from Werner Feibes
\nand James Schmitt now makes us the leading
\nrepository of modern art in the region.”<\/p>\n

Prior to the donation, The Hyde’s collection of
\nmodern art was formed around two significant
\npast donations. The first gift of 20th-century
\nart was made between 1992 and 1996 by the
\nlate Jane Murray and consists of 82 works. The
\nsecond major gift was made between 1999 and
\n2008, by the late Nancy Sills and her husband
\nDr. Stephen Sills, totaling 45 works.<\/p>\n

“The Feibes and Schmitt gift significantly
\nenhances our collection of Modern art,” said
\nCoe. “It expands and strengthens its scope and
\ndepth and opens new doors for exhibition and programmatic opportunities.”
\nShe said the gift of 55 works to The Hyde
\nrepresents one-third of the Feibes and Schmitt
\ncollection. The remaining two-thirds of the
\ncollection will be bequeathed to the museum
\nby Feibes.<\/p>\n

Feibes and Schmitt were first introduced
\nto The Hyde in 1998 by then-curator and later
\ndirector Randall Suffolk, who left in 2007 and is
\nthe incoming director of the High Museum of
\nArt in Atlanta.<\/p>\n

“I’m thrilled that these works have found a new
\nhome at The Hyde,” said Suffolk. “The Feibes &
\nSchmitt Collection single-handedly provides a
\nvital, new dimension to the Museum’s holdings
\nand will profoundly impact the visitor experience
\nand programming for generations to come.”<\/p>\n

“Werner Feibes and Jim Schmitt assembled
\ntheir collection very carefully and with fine
\njudgment, always choosing pieces they wanted to
\nlive with in their home,” said Paul V. Turner, Wattis
\nprofessor of art, emeritus, in the Department of
\nArt & Art History at Stanford University. “The
\nworks are of superb quality and over the years
\nmany of them have been borrowed for exhibitions
\nby major museums in America and Europe,
\nincluding the Guggenheim, Whitney, Museum
\nof Modern Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston,
\nand W\u00fcrttembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart.
\nAny art museum would be enriched by this
\ngenerous donation.”<\/p>\n

Two works from the recent gift are currently
\non view at The Hyde in the exhibition Pop Art
\nfrom the Feibes & Schmitt Collection, along with
\nfour works on loan from Feibes. The exhibit is
\non view in the Charles R. Wood Gallery until
\nSept. 27. Plans for an exhibition of works in the
\nFeibes and Schmitt gift are under development.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the museum announced more
\nthan 600 people a week are flocking to see “The
\nLate Drawings of Andy Warhol: 1973-1987”
\nand “Homer’s America: Selections from the
\nPermanent Collection.” Attendance is up 30
\npercent over last summer.<\/p>\n

“The Hyde Collection is bringing more than
\n600 people a week to the Glens Falls, Queensbury,
\nand Warren County area, about half of whom
\ntravel from outside the local region, state, or
\ncountry,” said Coe. “Many visitors to The Hyde
\nspend money in the community, stay in local
\ninns and hotels, eat in local restaurants, and
\nshop in local stores. They are hearing about the
\nMuseum through advertising supported by the
\ncity of Glens Falls, town of Queensbury, Warren
\nCounty, and the New York State Council on the
\nArts, plus our generous corporate sponsors and
\nfoundations.”<\/p>\n

TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel website,
\nrecently recognized The Hyde Collection with a
\nprestigious Certificate of Excellence. The award is
\nearned through consistently great reviews from
\nindependent travelers from all over the world.
