General Electric has come up with a date for
\nclosing its Fort Edward operation.<\/p>\n
The company announced in 2013 that operations
\nat the capacitor plant would eventually
\ncease.<\/p>\n
The company told workers and union representatives
\nthe facility will close Jan. 23.<\/p>\n
General Electric announced it will move all
\nof the plant’s operations to Clearwater, Fla. A
\nspokesman said employees who have chosen not
\nto transfer can explore other career opportunities
\nwithin General Electric.
\nThe company employs 9,000 people across
\nNew York state and abut 7,000 of those jobs are
\nlocated in the Capital Region.<\/p>\n
In October, GE announced it completed
\ndredging in New York’s Upper Hudson River.
\nSince 2009, GE has removed the majority of
\nPCBs from the Upper Hudson River, the company
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
\n(EPA) has called the project an historic achievement
\nthat protects the environment and human
\nhealth. GE said its crews removed more than
\n300,000 pounds of PCBs from the river – more
\nthan twice the amount that was anticipated.<\/p>\n
“Thirteen years ago, I committed GE to undertaking
\nan environmental dredging project
\nof a size, scope and complexity that had not
\nbeen attempted before,” said GE Chairman and
\nCEO Jeff Immelt. “Our goal was to perform this
\nwork as safely and effectively as possible in full
\ncompliance with the rigorous standards and
\ntimetable set by EPA.”<\/p>\n
Ann Klee, GE’s vice president of Global
\nOperations, Environment, Health and Safety,
\nsaid the project could not have been completed
\n“without the steadfast cooperation of local communities,
\nproperty owners and residents of the
\nUpper Hudson and our strong working relationship
\nwith EPA, the New York State Department
\nof Environmental Conservation and the New
\nYork State Canal Corporation.”<\/p>\n
Dredging took place over a 40-mile stretch of
\nthe Upper Hudson River between Fort Edward
\nand Troy. The work was performed 24 hours a
\nday, six days a week, for six months of the year
\nfor six years, according to the company. GE
\ninvested more than $1 billion to complete the
\nproject. More than 500 people were employed.<\/p>\n
GE also will continue the cleanups of its
