Callahan’s Family Discount Warehouse in
\nHudson Falls is part bargain basement and part
\ncharitable institution.<\/p>\n

The store sells returns and overstocks from
\nWalmart and other big box stores at discounted
\nprices, with 10 percent of the profits going to
\nthe Open Door Mission in Glens Falls. They also
\nsell donated clothing–no item priced above
\n$3–with 25 percent of the receipts going to the
\nMission.<\/p>\n

The Open Door Mission “is something my
\nwife and I believe in,” said Drew Callahan, who
\nowns the business along with his wife, Sarah.
\nThey learned of the Mission through their church,
\nCornerstone Bible Church in Fort Ann, and have
\nbeen involved with it since buying the Family
\nDiscount Warehouse business in July.<\/p>\n

“We don’t have the time to give them,” he noted,
\nso they contribute money. Their contributions
\nwere acknowledged at a recent donor banquet,
\nwhich Callahan found “very cool, very humbling,
\nactually.”
\nPart of the reason the Callahans are too busy
\nto actively participate in the work of the Open
\nDoor Mission is that “in the past year, we bought
\na business, had a child and began to build a yurt,”
\nhe said. They are building the yurt, a round building
\nof Mongolian antecedents, which will be their
\nhome, in South Bay Village, near Fort Ann. In
\naddition, the Callahans own Travel Well, a “bohemian
\nstyle boutique” in the Shirt Factory in Glens Falls.<\/p>\n

The businesses are family-run. Callahan’s
\nmother runs the Glens Falls gift shop, with Sarah
\nhelping out. The four employees at the Family
\nDiscount Warehouse include Sarah’s mother.<\/p>\n

The Callahans worked for the former owner
\nof the store, who called it Webitamerica. It began
\nas an online store, with similar stock, and then
\nexpanded to a brick and mortar store. The building
\nbegan as a garage for large trucks and then as
\na warehouse for the online business, according to
\nmanager Sean Smith.<\/p>\n

The business buys goods by the truckload from
\nreturn centers as well as overstocks, and goods in
\ndamaged boxes. Most of the goods are carefully
\ninspected before they go in the shelves, Callahan
\nsaid, and those that have not been inspected are
\nlabelled as such–and can be returned. Goods have
\ncolor-coded price tags that tell customers what is
\nused, what is damaged or missing parts, and what
\nhas not been inspected.<\/p>\n

In the future, there may be some special sales
\nand “we will try to pack the store right up to the
\ngills” with goods for the holidays, Callahan said.<\/p>\n

Callahan’s Family Discount Warehouse is
\nlocated at 56 North St. in Hudson Falls. The store
\nis open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through
\nFriday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
