The house is too big to care for. I don’t like
\ndriving in winter. We’re retired, and need fewer
\nworries. And one more thing –I may need help
\nin the future.<\/p>\n

These are comments heard during tours of
\nsenior housing communities. The reasons people
\nseek senior housing are varied, as varied as the
\nindividuals themselves. Factors for transition to
\na retirement community can be convenience,
\nsecurity, companionship and often times the
\nanticipated need for assistance as an older adult.<\/p>\n

Demand for retirement housing is strong,
\nand is keeping pace with the growth of the aging
\nboomer population. Yet even with demand and
\nviable options, relocating to a community can
\nprove to be challenging for some.
\nFundamentally, no one, regardless of age
\nlikes change. The physical move, the emotional
\ntransition of being the new person, the fear of
\nthe unknown are all significant concerns for any
\nindividual. Many prospective residents pursue
\nsenior living with their adult children part of
\nthe discussion.<\/p>\n

Just as likely, seniors seek out information
\nindependent of their children. Often, seniors
\nexpress the importance of self-determination,
\nwhere they are calling the shots, so to speak, for
\nthe “next chapter of their life.”<\/p>\n

Regardless of who is leading the discussion,
\ntwo factors are essential to a successful move.
\nFirst, that staff are knowledgeable about senior related
\nissues. Secondly, that they can answer the
\nmost common question (and ultimately the key
\ndriver to selection) of what type of supportive
\ncare or service is available to allow a senior to
\nremain independent in the event of illness, disability
\nor other limitation.<\/p>\n

All adults share the desire to remain in an independent
\nsetting for as long as possible, preferably
\nforever. Known as “aging in place,” achieving this
\ngoal means the retirement community must offer
\nmore than just an apartment. This is the value of
\nsupportive housing.<\/p>\n

A combination of convenience and need, the
\nconcept of supportive housing is gaining momentum
\nand replacing the idea that an apartment
\ncomplex of older individuals alone is sufficient
\nto maintain independence. Supportive housing
\ndoes not replace more advanced models of care,
\nsuch as assisted living or skilled nursing; as both
\nserve an important role when health care conditions
\nrequire it.<\/p>\n

Supportive housing is the thoughtful combination
\nof retirement community living, with optional
\nservices available to the resident at a time, place
\nand frequency that they choose.<\/p>\n

If cooking is no longer an option, meals are
\ndelivered to the apartment or available in the
\ndining room. For those who no longer drive,
\ntransportation for outings and groceries are
\nroutinely scheduled.<\/p>\n

When challenges move beyond inconvenient,
\nand disability or other limitation shifts an individual’s
\nperspective of independence, different
\ntypes of support are needed. This is where an
\nintegrated multi-level senior healthcare provider
\nis essential. There is a coordinated approach
\nwhich is a relief to many.<\/p>\n
