I once hired a project leader who was a mis-hire.\u00a0 <\/span>She was technically very competent.\u00a0 <\/span>She had come highly recommended by another member of our senior leadership team.\u00a0 <\/span>Her recommender had worked with her at a previous company, in the same role we were hiring for.\u00a0 <\/span>We were all very excited and had high hopes that this department was going to be competently led. <\/span><\/p>\n

But she irritated her staff and her clients.\u00a0 <\/span>I spent a year coaching my bad hire. Finally, I had to let her go.\u00a0 <\/span>She had just lost a new client of ours.\u00a0 <\/span>They did not like working with her. They worried that she embodied the attitudes of the rest of the company.\u00a0 <\/span>When I challenged her about what was going on with the client, she declared that the client was stupid.\u00a0 <\/span>Our company had built its reputation on customer delight.<\/i>\u00a0 <\/span>Yet, though she knew how to manage a project, she did not know how to delight our customers.<\/span><\/p>\n

After letting her go, I went to inform her staff. I clearly remember a conversation with one staff member.\u00a0 <\/span>His reaction was \u201cWell, I always figured you were pretty<\/i> smart. I hoped<\/i> that you would figure it out eventually<\/i>.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Ouch!\u00a0 <\/span>Her staff figured out she was a bad hire long before I did!<\/span><\/p>\n

The people that are being hurt in your company see the failings of bad performers sooner than you do. I know that I waited too long to be \u2018fair to her\u2019.\u00a0 <\/span>And I dreaded starting the hiring process again.\u00a0 <\/span>And so, I hung on too long.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Entrepreneurs are often more loyal to their employees than the employees are to them.\u00a0 <\/span>Especially the ones that were with you early on.\u00a0 <\/span>What they did well when you were smaller is not what you need now.\u00a0 <\/span>Learn from my mistake and view performance with a critical eye.\u00a0 <\/span>Don\u2019t re-live my error.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
