quick fix.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Don\u2019t.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It doesn\u2019t work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The best implementations of technology have only one thing in common.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They are all based on automating a good process.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Bad technology implementations often exist because you automated a bad process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In order to address these business issues, you need to follow a formula.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>First, define the problem.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I also refer to this as \u2018What problem are we solving?\u2019<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Make sure that you are addressing the underlying issue.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Don\u2019t fall into the trap of treating the symptoms of the problem.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Also make sure everyone agrees on what you are trying to fix.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A written mission statement describing the problem assures we all are working on the same one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Next, spend time imagining the solution.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What do you really want to happen?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When you take the time to examine the whole issue, you may see things that you miss when focusing too narrowly.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You probably should flow chart the ideal process.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Pictures tell stories.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That will help you figure out what might be missing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And, help you figure out who else might be affected.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Resolve both of those issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><!--more-->Try out the new process without applying technology.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You may find things you want to adjust a bit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When you are sure you have the right flow, you can begin the technology search.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Figure out what alternatives you have.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Talk with people outside your company.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Clear perspectives come from having new eyes look at the problem and the process. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Only after all that are you ready to automate.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Technology does not solve problems.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And, you will waste money if you implement the wrong process.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Or fix the wrong
