Read This."},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_31533\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31533\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31533 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.glensfalls.com\/glensfallsbusinessjournal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/109\/2019\/01\/cruz-c-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.glensfalls.com\/glensfallsbusinessjournal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/109\/2019\/01\/cruz-c-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.glensfalls.com\/glensfallsbusinessjournal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/109\/2019\/01\/cruz-c.jpg 432w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31533\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michael Cruz, president of Lighthouse Advisors LLC in Queensbury.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you are trying to hire, you will wind up interviewing Millennials.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They DO bring a different mentality to work.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Some good, some less than good.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One of my mentors said \u201cI can\u2019t change anyone\u2019s behavior.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But, I have the right to rent behavior during the workday.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Let\u2019s focus on how you can set ground rules.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Recently, I was the speaker at a session for the NextGen group at the Chamber.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One of the keys I left with them was that they needed to focus on what others want.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I explained that written notes go a long way to thank people.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Email and texts don\u2019t count.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The key is to use your rules for your business.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>At that NextGen session, I explained that we all could learn from each other. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is important for them to know what makes us tick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><!--more-->So, start setting the expectations during the interview.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Make sure that you know what traits any employee needs to be successful in the role you are hiring for.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>People with limited work histories can\u2019t show you lots of job successes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But, you can make sure that they know how to handle conflict. How do they overcome obstacles at work?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>How do they communicate with others \u2013 especially customers?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Get examples of where they have exhibited those behaviors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Make sure in the second (or later) interviews that you explain what the job is.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And, what you expect them to need to do to be successful.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>After they are on board, make sure that you reinforce what you expect-early and often.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If you see things that trouble you, you need to let them know.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And they deserve to know what you think.
