If you are trying to hire, you will wind up interviewing Millennials.\u00a0 <\/span>They DO bring a different mentality to work.\u00a0 <\/span>Some good, some less than good.\u00a0 <\/span>One of my mentors said \u201cI can\u2019t change anyone\u2019s behavior.\u00a0 <\/span>But, I have the right to rent behavior during the workday.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Let\u2019s focus on how you can set ground rules.<\/span><\/p>\n

Recently, I was the speaker at a session for the NextGen group at the Chamber.\u00a0 <\/span>One of the keys I left with them was that they needed to focus on what others want.\u00a0 <\/span>I explained that written notes go a long way to thank people.\u00a0 <\/span>Email and texts don\u2019t count.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The key is to use your rules for your business.\u00a0 <\/span>At that NextGen session, I explained that we all could learn from each other. \u00a0 <\/span>It is important for them to know what makes us tick.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, start setting the expectations during the interview.\u00a0 <\/span>Make sure that you know what traits any employee needs to be successful in the role you are hiring for.\u00a0 <\/span>People with limited work histories can\u2019t show you lots of job successes.\u00a0 <\/span>But, you can make sure that they know how to handle conflict. How do they overcome obstacles at work?\u00a0 <\/span>How do they communicate with others \u2013 especially customers?\u00a0 <\/span>Get examples of where they have exhibited those behaviors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Make sure in the second (or later) interviews that you explain what the job is.\u00a0 <\/span>And, what you expect them to need to do to be successful.\u00a0 <\/span>After they are on board, make sure that you reinforce what you expect-early and often.\u00a0 <\/span>If you see things that trouble you, you need to let them know.\u00a0 <\/span>And they deserve to know what you think. Always give them feedback.<\/span><\/p>\n

Do that and you will get good employees.\u00a0 <\/span>It doesn\u2019t matter to you if they believe in it.\u00a0 <\/span>They just have to rent you the right behaviors for your business and your customers.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
