Earlier this year, shortly after the $2.15 billion dollar sale of the Dodgers, rumors began to surface regarding the Yankees shopping the team. Representatives from the team quickly responded that the story was pure fiction and the story died there. However, after falling just short of another championship, I’ve put together 5 reasons why they might want to reconsider:<\/p>\n
1. Approaching a post-Jeter era – We’ve all been regularly reminded of the 27 World Championships the Yankees have amassed. Seven of those championships were during Steinbrenner family ownership and of those seven, only two were without Derek Jeter as their Captain. Jeter has one year left in his contract with the Yankees. If you believe, as<\/p>\n
I do, that Jeter is the single biggest contributing factor to the Yankees success since 1996, then you could reasonably expect a decline in team success after his retirement. Does the Steinbrenner family want to be at the helm during this potential decline?<\/p>\n
2. Increasingly Competitive AL East – The Red Sox had an awful year and are facing a rebuild. With that being said, they’ve just hired a new manager and are sure make acquisitions this off season. Combine that with a strong Rays team, a feisty Orioles squad and a Yankee lineup featuring some bloated contracts (A-Rod, Teixeira), the next five years might not be so pretty. Are they really in this for the long haul?<\/p>\n
3. Incredible Return on Investment – It’s funny to refer to $8.8 million dollars as low but that’s what the Yankees went for when George Steinbrenner purchased the team in 1973. Through consistently reinvesting in top free agents and through brilliant marketing of the team history (27 Time World Champions is on EVERYTHING Yankees) Steinbrenner was able to create a true empire. Some estimate that the Yankees could currently sell for upwards of $2.9 billion dollars.<\/p>\n
4. Nowhere to go but down – The Yankees are by far the most successful sports team in the history of sports. With that being said, maintaining the level of success that has been established during the Steinbrenner era could be difficult to maintain (average of a championship every 5.6 years since 1973). Less success = less ticket\/merchandise sales = less overall value. Business 101 – Buy low, sell high.<\/p>\n
5. We need a new George – Love him or hate him, we lost a truly unique personality when we lost George Steinbrenner. Nobody could ever match his incredible contributions to the sport or legendary ability to rule with an iron fist. However, there are plenty of mini-Steinbrenners out there that could liven things up. Donald Trump or Mark Cuban would get the tabloids salivating nicely.<\/p>\n
