It’s ninety-five degrees in the middle of July and you’re standing inside a baseball stadium ten minutes before the gates open. It’s the eighth day of a ten game home stand. Your legs and back are already sore from standing on the hard concrete all week. The shift hasn’t started yet but you can already feel the sweat forming inside your team issued shirt. Just outside the gates you see a wall of security personnel ready to start the process of screening fans upon entry. Just beyond the security guards, there are thousands of people waiting, in the hot sun, to come in and enjoy Our National Pastime.<\/p>\n
The gates open and like the start of a horse race, they’re off! A sea of people rushes towards you and suddenly you find yourself surrounded. The questions start to fly: “How do I get to the ballpark museum? Where’s the restroom? Why don’t you allow laptops? Do you sell sun block? Where’s the restroom? I lost my ticket for the parking garage so what do I do now? Do you offer wheelchairs for people who don’t get around very well? Where’s the restroom? Where’s this section (while pushing a ticket in your face)? My tickets didn’t scan at the gate and they made me stay outside for an extra 30 minutes and I want to know what YOU’RE going to do for ME! Are my seats in the sun? Can you move me if my seats are in the sun? What do we do if it rains? Where’s the bathroom?<\/p>\n
Sound like fun? This is a small sample of what’s it’s like to work as a Customer Service Representative at a major league ballpark (and no, you don’t get to meet the players). It takes a very special person to be pleasant while performing this type of work.<\/p>\n
During my time working spent working with various sports teams to include the Mets, Jets, and Yankees, I’ve gotten to see a side of professional sports that most people do not. Overseeing a large staff of Customer Service Representatives, working directly with high level sports executives to better understand the fan’s needs, entertaining high profile guests and handling literally thousands of fan issues has given me a unique understanding of how these teams operate.
