Today’s blog will be about neck pain, more specifically cervical disc bulges and herniations. If you followed The Players Championship this weekend you saw Tiger Woods drop out of competition. Early reports are that he may have sustained a cervical disc injury. Do not confuse this post with your most popular gossip magazine. I’m less concerned with Tiger Woods than I am the nature of his condition. Education about your condition is very important so I’ll go into more detail.

Cervical spine disc conditions are less common than Lumbar simply due to the physical properties of the discs in that area; height, stresses placed upon, and mobility of the discs. That being said they still do happen. Symptoms include radiating from the neck down the arm into the forearm and likely into the hands and fingers. This pain can usually be classified as a numbness, tingling and possible burning; much like the pains of Sciatica we talked about last week. Also weakness or incoordination may be present. Patient’s often comment that they can no longer open jars or hold a glass.

Diagnosis can be made through physical and orthopedic examination. If severe and unchanging symptoms persist, MRI may be warranted. Treatments can range depending on severity and patient preferences. Early treatments often include pharmaceutical intervention for pain management combined with Chiropractic care or Physical Therapy aimed at improved function. Surgery may be indicated if more conservative treatments fail.
