What makes a community great is the support structure that holds everyone together. Since 1977, the Moreau Community Center has provided a strong vision and core values centered on making our community even stronger.
Director of Development Kelly Obermayer shares more about the programs at the Moreau Community Center and what the community means to her.
1) Can you introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about what you do at the Moreau Community Center?
I have worked in the non-profit fundraising/development field since 2007 and was recently
appointed as the Center’s Director of Development. My primary responsibilities will include fund
development, oversight of special events, public relations and building donor relationships. I look
forward to utilizing my experiences in assisting with our goals to increase the community’s awareness of the Center’s programs and services that impact the precious lives within our community.
2) What communities does the center serve?
South Glens Falls, Town of Moreau, Saratoga, Warren & Washington Counties. Although some of our services are restricted to South Glens Falls School District residents only, the majority of our programs and events are open to all and membership to the Center is free.
3) You have a vast array of community events and services, what is one service or event you are most known for or is most important in the community?
We are ‘most known’ for our Senior Trips. However we pride ourselves on providing services and working with agencies collaboratively to support those in need. Everyone who reaches out to the Center’s staff, volunteers or members, receives something from a vast array of resources (food from our food pantry, transportation, referrals, a sense of belonging and always knowing someone cares).
4) What are some upcoming programs going on for the holidays?
2014 Holiday Caring Program is once again upon us and we expect there will be more people this year applying for assistance. The goal is to make sure that all our friends and neighbors in the Town of Moreau and Village of South Glens Falls that are in need will be helped. Last year, 93 families (34 elderly, 98 adults and 105 children) received assistance at Thanksgiving and 171 families (45 elderly, 213 adult, and 245 children) at Christmas because of our community’s generosity and support.
5) What is the biggest need in the community right now?
There are many interconnected issues facing our community, including lack of jobs, the need for affordable childcare, and in too many cases, needing food to sustain families. We can’t fix all the problems, but we can be a leader in the community to combat these myriad issues.
6) How can businesses and organizations rent your space or host community events?
Individuals, businesses and organizations can rent event or meeting space, sponsor/participate in one of our events or programs, advertise in our publications and social medial sites, host events and opportunities to assist us in growing awareness of our mission. Our rental rates are reasonable and welcome opportunities to collaborate with anyone in a way to benefit all. Not-for-Profit organizations can utilize space free-of-charge. Please contact the Center to discuss any of the opportunities or suggest something new.
7) What does the community of Moreau/South Glens Falls mean to you?
The community of Moreau/South Glens Falls is friendly, supportive and welcoming. They embrace everyone as family and will do whatever is needed to assist in one’s needs, enhance the quality of life and the sense of belonging. One is not alone here as there is always someone to listen, support and share in a positive and enhancing way.
8) Are there volunteer opportunities for community members at the Center?
Without our volunteers we would not be able to provide 2/3 of the programs and services we offer. Our Thrift & Craft Stores are completely staffed by volunteers. Volunteers support our events, answer phones, mailings, food pantry, cooking/baking, fundraising, deliver meals on wheels, and more. There is always a need for individuals, groups and organizations to volunteer for a variety of projects both short/long term that help us help our neighbors.
9) Can you describe the afterschool program for kids?
The Moreau Community Center sponsors a before and after school “Kids Korner” program. K-5 students, within the South Glens Falls District four elementary schools, are able to work on homework, socialize with friends, play games, participate in craft activities and play in the gym or outdoors. To learn more about this safe, activity-oriented, certified program or to apply, contact the Center.
10) What do you want people to know about Moreau Community Center?
We are a ‘COMMUNITY’ Center for all ages with our programs and resources for youth through senior citizens. Friends of the Moreau Community Center have made the Center their Hub and gathering place for group activities, social support, public information, and social engagement. Our Goal is to continue to provide the best possible services to the people of our community. Funds generated from ‘fees for services’ do not cover all the costs of operating a Center that provides immeasurable benefits and resources to so many. The generosity of individuals, businesses and organizations has an impact on our future and ability to create a compassionate and inclusive connection to the precious lives within our community.
