Glens Falls Mayor Jack Diamond announced last week that the NYS Boys Basketball Tournament will take place at the Glens Falls Civic Center through 2016. The tournament has been a local tradition since the early 80’s, and the current contract was due to expire in 2013.
The tournament committee was expecting some competition from Syracuse Univerisity, home to the Carrier Dome, which seats 33,000 people. A lot of work goes into the tournament, and it all has to be carried out without making a profit. This is thought to be the reason for the Civic Center submitting the only bid before the deadline.
The tournament has generated $2.5 million in profits since 1981, all of which went to NYSPHSAA to support athletic programs throughout the state.
Hours of hard work (much of it by local volunteers) has kept this great event in the city of Glens Falls for another four years.
Local business are excited about this, as it has become an iconic event in the area and brings thousands of visitors for the weekend. Glens Falls regional tourism tends to slow down in the winter and spring, and this event is a huge draw.
Do you watch the NYSPHSAA Boy Basketball Tournament every spring? I remember seeing some NBA players come up through the Civic Center on their way to the Association. Stephon Marbury, Ben Gordon, and Sebastian Telfair to name a few. The tournament offers some of the best high school basketball you’ll see!
