Welcome to Glens Falls, Walt Whitman! For the next six months, visitors to The Hyde Collection will have a chance to set their eyes on Thomas Eakins’ famous Portrait of Walt Whitman, an evocative image of one of America’s most influential poets, by one of the nation’s greatest artists – a piece that rarely leaves its home in Philadelphia.
The Whitman portrait is usually housed at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA), but PAFA’s recent Henry Ossawa Tanner: Modern Spirit exhibit needed a piece The Hyde had. So they made a deal.
In exchange for a year-long loan of The Hyde’s Portrait of Henry Ossawa Tanner, PAFA gave The Hyde the amazing opportunity to display the Whitman portrait for six months.
The portrait of Whitman is considered one of Eakins’ finest paintings. Visitors can see this extraordinary painting which will be located in the Hyde House until the end of December.
