Editor’s Note 02/18/22: Unfortunately the ice is just not safe right now, and Fire & Ice had to be cancelled once again. Event organizers are trying again for February 25!
Check out tomorrow’s event in Crandall Park, find other wintry fun around Glens Falls, and brush up on local news, including a new bookstore at The Shirt Factory.

Local News on Books, Baked Goods & More

The Shirt Factory Adds a Third Bookstore
The Shirt Factory is adding another independent bookstore to its robust list of unique shops. Beldame Books will host its grand opening tomorrow and Saturday, February 18 and 19, from 12pm to 5pm in Room 118E. Beldame Books will specialize in comics, graphic novels, and Manga, as well as more mainstream genres like horror and mystery.
If you’re checking out the new bookstore this weekend you may as well frequent the other two: The Bookhouse/Sweetside Records (pictured above) at 18 Curran Lane has a strong music focus and sells everything from biographies of musicians to records, and they’re open 11am to 6pm Friday and Saturday. Ghost Books in room 210 is open 11am to 5pm Friday and Saturday, and here you’ll find antiques, art, and oddities in addition to books.
Cafe Part of Rock Hill Bakehouse & Cafe Temporarily Closes Its Doors
The cafe portion of Rock Hill Bakehouse & Cafe (same owner as The Bookhouse) is temporarily closed, with plans to reopen in April, reports News 10 ABC. They have simply not seen a lot of in-person patrons recently, and takeout hasn’t been thriving either. But they will be back with their beloved sandwiches and even more in the spring! The bakery/store element of the business remains open 8:30am to 4:30pm.

Glens Falls YMCA Hosting a Lifeguard Training Course
You (or maybe your teenager!) can “become whistle worthy” with a Red Cross lifeguard training program at the Glens Falls YMCA, to be held on Fridays from February 28 through April 17. The certification lasts for two years, and includes an in-class portion as well as in the water. Participants must be at least 15 years of age.
An Update on the South High Marathon Dance
The beloved South High Marathon Dance event is scheduled for May 13, and will once again be held at the Great Escape, the board of directors posted on Tuesday. It has not yet been decided if the event will be open to the public or SHMD supporters. The longstanding event – this will be its 45th year running – became a nonprofit organization in 2018, due to how much money the students were raising. Proceeds go towards those suffering from serious illnesses and their families.
“Six Flags Great Escape has been a longtime supporter of SHMD, and following the success of last year’s event (the first ever held away from South Glens Falls High School), we are looking forward to this year’s marathon dance!” SHMD Co-Advisor Tom Myott said in a statement.
