Tolkien lovers of Upstate New York, your time has come: Adirondack Theatre Festival is bringing The Hobbit to life in downtown Glens Falls! This new production opens on July 6th and follows on the heels of The Chinese Lady, which received rave reviews.
As always, the goal of the Adirondack Theatre Festival (ATF) is to engage and enrich the Capital Region through these productions, which feature top-level professionals from across the globe, including many who have worked in television, in movies, and both on- and off-Broadway.
The cast of The Hobbit is led by Blake Segal (Blue Bloods) as Bilbo Baggins and includes Rin Allen, a stuntwoman on Gotham, as well as Ryan Pater, Meagan Kimberly Smith, and Marshall Evan McGuire. All ATF performances take place at the Charles R Wood Theater in downtown Glens Falls.
The Hobbit is directed by Joe Isenburg and was adapted by Greg Banks from the best-selling fantasy novel of the same name. The play features Bilbo Baggins, a contented hobbit, whose life is thrown into chaos when he is called upon to help the Dwarfs, who have been robbed of their riches and their home.
The set, which was created by Sarah Beth Hall, was inspired by local industrial warehouses and empty factories, and features rolling scaffolds on which actors will spin, climb, and disappear as they perform. First preview of The Hobbit will begin on July 6th and 7th, with opening night on July 8th. Shows take place at 7:30 PM on most days, with select shows at 3:00 PM.
Adirondack Theatre Festival Producing Artistic Director Miriam Weisfeld said, “We’re tremendously excited to work with Greg Banks and Middle Earth Enterprises on this timeless story. Bilbo reminds us that even the most humble of us can rise up and be a hero in the battle against greed and corruption. This production delivers all the highlights of Tolkien’s book, from wizards to dragons to Gollum and the famous ring. At the same time, it’s the kind of creative, imaginative event that can only happen in the theatre.”
This year, guests can also look forward to two more productions:
Last Stop on Market Street, an all-ages Motown musical that will run from July 28-31
Mystic Pizza, a musical based on the 1988 Julia Roberts movie, which will run from August 5-7
