one of my fondest memories of growing up on a dairy farm was the food. we didn’t have much money, so most of our food was home grown. even our unpasteurized milk came into the house from the milkhouse after chores. a popular and delicious meal was what my mother called farmer’s soup. when green beans and or shell peas were ready to be picked, my dad dug some tiny potatoes, and pulled up some green onions. all of the vegetables were cooked in a small amount of water together and when done some milk and butter was added and we ate from soup bowls. i think i can remember the soup so well because there was plenty and i could have seconds. that was not always the case! at the cafe this week, i made a version of this very healthy and hearty soup, but i added cubed ham and some diced sweet red pepper. i have to admit that i also added heavy cream. i used dill weed, a little garlic powder, salt and pepper. customers loved it and it brought back special memories for me. our farmers’ market is a wonderful bounty of all things good to eat. the farmers are a wealth of knowlege regarding tips for preparing their produce and we benefit. try the soup for an easy meal, the farmers will thank you.
