Happy Fourth of July! I don’t know about you, but other than Thanksgiving this is my favorite holiday.
Blueberry pies, BBQ’s, sparklers and crisp red, white & blue bunting hanging from front porches. Folks sitting in their rockers sipping a tall iced tea with the warm evening breeze fluttering the flags. OK, it’s a little over the top, Martha-Stewart-picture-perfect – but isn’t it fun to imagine.
Did you know that in 1944, Look Magazine named Glens Falls “Hometown USA” due to its obvious charm and character. They had endearing images of freckled-faced kids riding their scooters; mom and dad strolling arm-in-arm window shopping on Glen Street; little Susie and Tommy eating ice cream cones while their Cocker Spaniel looked up at them adoringly. I think you get the picture. Speaking of pictures here are some from that time long ago and far away.
OK, now back to 2010 and to our real world. Actually, Glens Falls still has wonderful, feel-good, homey, family entertainment year round and this is what’s coming up for July 4 weekend:
Summer Jam: Saturday, July 3 at 6:45pm. The Beach Party Boys tribute band. Revisit the 60’s surfer sounds of The Beach Boys, Jan & Dean and other hits…followed by FIREWORKS! regional Radio Group partners with the City of Glens Falls to put on this popular event. Admission is ONLY $3. Gates open 4:30pm at East Field, Dix Avenue.
Fourth of July Concert: Glens Falls Symphony Orchestra treats us to a FREE concert at 7:30 followed by (guess what?) FIREWORKS! Bring the whole family, your neighbor’s relatives, strangers…anyone you think will enjoy a beautiful evening serenaded by 54 of the finest musicians the region has to offer.
Here’s a little know fact: Glens Falls is the smallest city in the entire US with it’s very own 54-piece symphony orchestra. Just another reason to be proud of our “Hometown USA”.
So hang your flag, sit on your porch, light some sparklers and have a happy and safe July 4th.
Bye for now, Alice
P.S. Remember to get your pets spayed or neutered and protect them from fireworks.
